Cool Using Bluetooth™ with your CLIÉ handheld

Using Bluetooth™ with your CLIÉ handheld
New models PEG-NZ90, PEG-TG50, UX50/40 and other models with Bluetooth™ Memory Stick™.

Using the Bluetooth™ functions on your CLIÉ handheld

In this section you will discover how to configure your Bluetooth™-enabled CLIÉ handheld so you can connect it with other Bluetooth™-enabled devices. Special attention is given to synchronising your CLIÉ handheld with a Sony Ericsson mobile phone and a VAIO computer, and remotely commanding a camera.

If you are not familiar with operating your CLIÉ handheld, please refer to your user manual for assistance.

Installing or reinstalling the Bluetooth™ software

The latest models of the CLIÉ (PEG-NZ90, PEG-TG50) have the Bluetooth™ functionality built-in as well as the necessary software. If for some reason you need to install or reinstall the software later, or if you are using a model with the Bluetooth™ Memory Stick™ and need to update the software, proceed as follows:

Connect your CLIÉ handheld to your computer via the cradle/cable.
Place the Bluetooth Memory Stick Installation CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive of your computer.
Click Install and follow the instructions onscreen.
To complete the installation you need to HotSync® the CLIÉ handheld with the computer.
This process will complete the installation of the Bluetooth™ modules.
When the installation process is finished, do not forget to reset your CLIÉ handheld (you will be requested to do so on the CLIÉ screen).
Your CLIÉ handheld is now ready for configuring the Bluetooth™ application.

Enabling Bluetooth™ on your CLIÉ

To start using the Bluetooth™ functions with your CLIÉ handheld, you first have to start your Sony Ericsson mobile phone and enable the Bluetooth™ function there.

Starting up your Sony Ericsson mobile phone (T68m, T68i, T610 or P800)

If you are using a Sony Ericsson T68m or T68i mobile phone, proceed as follows:

Switch on the power of your mobile phone.
On your display, go to Menu, select Connections, select Bluetooth, select Options, selectPhone name and select Edit.
Enter a name for your mobile phone.
Go to Menu, Connections, Bluetooth, and select Discoverable.
Your phone is now ready to be recognised by the CLIÉ handheld.

If you are using a Sony Ericsson T610 mobile phone, proceed as follows:

Switch on the power of your mobile phone.
Push the Command button, select Connectivity, and select Bluetooth.
On the Bluetooth page, you can see four options of which you only need two now:
Select Turn on.
Select Options, select Visibility and select Show Phone. Then select Phone name, type a Name and press OK. Select Phone services if you want to view a list of available services (dial-up, file transfer, imaging, and so on).
Your phone is now ready to be recognised by the CLIÉ handheld.
Later on, you can select Add (New device) to search for new devices to add to the list (for more details, see the section Configuring Sony Ericsson phones for device discovery with your CLIÉ (T68m, T68i, T610 and P800)).
If you are using a Sony Ericsson P800 mobile phone, proceed as follows:

Switch on the power of your mobile phone.
On the display, select All, and then Tools in the menu list, select Control panel, go to the Connections tab, and then select Bluetooth.
You are now in the Bluetooth Control panel. When you are configuring it for the first time, the list of the Devices tab will be empty. Select the Settings tab.
You will see three parameters, which you will have to define:
Enter a Name for your mobile phone.
Set the parameter Operation mode to Discoverable.
Set the parameter Receiving items to Always receive, Ask first or Never receive, according to the necessary security.
Tap Done and Home.
Your phone is now ready to be recognised by the CLIÉ handheld.
Later on, you can tap the Devices tab and the Add button to add devices to the list (for more details, see the section Configuring Sony Ericsson phones for device discovery with your CLIÉ (T68m, T68i, T610 and P800)).

Configuring a connection on your CLIÉ handheld

In order to be able to use your mobile phone as a modem to make your CLIÉ handheld connect to the Internet and, for example, browse the web, you have to first select the connection for your phone application and next define the network you are going to use.
There are basically two ways to do this: Edit Connection and Network settings, or configure Sony Connection Manager (Coma).

Edit Connection and Network settings

To create the connection for your phone application, proceed as follows:

Tap the Home icon.
In the top right-hand corner, select System in the Category Menu.
Tap the Prefs icon.
In the top right-hand corner, select Connection in the Category Menu.
Tap New to create a new connection.
The Edit Connection dialog box appears.

Enter the different parameters for the connection:
o Connect to: Modem.
o Via: Bluetooth.
o Device: tap to find and select your device, tap OK.
o Dialing: Touchtone™.
o Volume: select the volume you prefer.
Depending on the devices, you may not hear anything, whatever the setting is.
Please refer to the manual of the device in question to see if this is normal or not.
o Tap OK to finish.
Your connection is saved and ready for use. Now define your network settings.
To define the preferences of the network you are using, proceed as follows:

Tap the Home icon.
In the top right-hand corner, select System in the Category Menu.
Tap the Prefs icon.
In the top right-hand corner, select Network in the Category Menu.
Go to Menu in the top left-hand corner and select New.
Enter the network settings you received from your network operator or Internet Service Provider:
o Service provider,
o User name,
o Password,
o Type of connection (select from the drop-down menu the connection you have just created),
o Phone number.
Tap Details.
Select a Connection type (for example, PPP).
Select DNS Query and IP address assigned Automatically or enter the DNS and IP values you received from your Internet Service Provider.
Tap OK.
Tap Done to save the settings or tap Connect for immediate connection to the Internet.

NOTE: If you see on the phone's screen that the Bluetooth Connection is lost, please make the phone undiscoverable and try again.

You are now connected to the Internet. You can start your browser and surf the Internet, or you can send and receive e-mails (see below: Browsing the web with your CLIÉ handheld and Sending and receiving e- mails with your CLIE handheld). Once the Connection and Network settings are set and saved on your CLIÉ handheld, you can simply start your browser application and it will initiate the connection automatically at the appropriate time.

Sony Connection Manager (Coma)

If you have Sony Connection Manager (Coma) installed on your CLIÉ handheld by default or you have it installed yourself from your installation CD-ROM, it is even easier to create a new connection with the right settings, for example, GPRS or another kind of technology.

To define the settings of the Sony Connection Manager, proceed as follows:

Tap Sony Coma in the Home screen.
The Connection Manager launches.

Select your Language.
Select your Country.
Select your Provider.
Select type or model of your Phone.
Select via Bluetooth.
Tap Advanced, select Use CID, type User name and Password, check Connection name and Network name. Tap Create and finally tap OK.
The new connection is now saved and ready for use.
Select Connections in the Preferences screen.
Select the connection created by Sony Coma and then the Bluetooth™ device you want to use (select Connection, Edit, Tap to discover...).
Note: In order to make a connection to the Sony Ericsson T68i phone model, it needs to be set to Not discoverable.

You are now connected to the Internet. You can start your browser and surf the Internet, or you can send and receive e-mails (see below: Browsing the web with your CLIÉ handheld and Sending and receiving e- mails with your CLIE handheld).

Browsing the web with your CLIÉ handheld

You will need web-browsing software installed on your CLIÉ handheld, which may be provided by a third party such as AvantGo™ or NetFront™. Check your installation CD-ROM and install it when necessary.

To browse the web with your CLIÉ handheld, proceed as follows:

Make sure the Connection and Network settings are configured correctly.
Refer to Configuring a connection on your CLIÉ handheld to learn how to proceed.
Start a browser application, such as NetFront™.
Go to the NetFront™ Menu, select Options and select NetFront Settings.
You now have access to four screens where you can determine preferences, such as showing images, tables, cascading style sheets, java, cookies settings, entering a proxy server, typing the URL for the home button, etc. By entering these settings, you will have the browser application behave exactly in the way you want it to, depending on your preferences as for speed, detail, execution and connection.
When you have finished, tap Done.
Your settings will be saved.
Return to the NetFront™ Menu, select Options and select Preferences.
If you configured the Connection and Network in the previous section, you can select the Service and the Connection you want to use, otherwise enter User name, Password and Phone number for your Internet Service Provider.
When you are done, tap Connect to be connected immediately with the Internet.
You are now ready to browse the World Wide Web and use NetFront™ in the same way as you would any other browser application.
Note: If you are not familiar with browsing, please consult the help files of NetFront™ (go to Menu, select Options, Help) and/or the software section of the user manual for your CLIÉ handheld.

Sending and receiving e-mails with your CLIÉ handheld

You also need e-mail software installed on your CLIÉ handheld, such as CLIE Mail. Check your installation CD-ROM and install it if it is not there by default.

To send and receive e-mails with your CLIÉ handheld, proceed as follows:

Make sure the Connection and Network or CoMa settings are configured correctly.
Refer to Configuring a connection on your CLIÉ handheld to learn how to proceed.
Start the application CLIE Mail.

Go to the CLIE Mail Menu, select Options, Accounts.
Create a new account by tapping New and entering the parameters you received from your network operator or Internet Service provider.
o Display name,
o E-mail address,
o Incoming server (POP3) and Outgoing server (SMTP),
o Your account name (log-in) and password,
o The network settings for your account.
These settings will be saved when you tap Done, so you will have to do this only once.
Tap the Text icon in the lower left corner to start writing an e-mail message.

o Enter an e-mail address,
o Enter a subject,
o Type the message,
o Use the attachment button, if necessary.
Tap Send for the message to be moved to the Outbox.
Tap the Send Mail icon (red arrow up) to start the connection and the sending procedure or tap the Send and Receive icon (red and blue arrow) to send and receive at the same time.
Receive mail only by tapping the Receive icon (blue arrow down).
You can use CLIE Mail like any other e-mail application.
Note: Refer to the user manual of CLIE Mail for more detailed instructions.

I was able to transfer my contact list from my NX60 to my T616, but no dice with trying to get the T616 to dial up my isp with Netfront. The phone didn't even register the numbers to dial up.

Does anyone have any ideas???

TIA

Great post. Bluetooth the solution for cableless connections. What a pain it is to get it set-up.

Now all we need is a good cross app Macro utility. Let see to do SMS to my phone - turn Bluetooth on UX & Phone, Moblie Manager to setup connection, SMS to connect! (4 Steps) BT HotSync hmmmm - Turn BT on, Network - Windows RAS, HotSync (3 Steps), File Exchange - Turn BT on, Network - Windows RAS, SMBMate - Connect (3 steps)

Nothing is ever as simple as we would hope. Maybe OS6 will have build-in shortcuts for setting all these steps once and for all!

Talking Sr.

Do you know/consider it is possible to use a Clie (especifically a PEG TG-50/u) as a "hands free" for a T637 Sony Ericcson cel phone?

I have a Clie TJ37 and I just purchased a new Vaio VGN-S46GP notebook which is Bluetooth equipt. I was wondering, even though Sony has discontinued the PEGA-MSB1 (the Bluetooth Memory Stick), if there was anyone out there who might know where I can purchase one.
