| UX complaints: screen size and cradle charger My UX is still charging and I have yet to test out its software capability. From the outside, the device has a very sturdy built and the size is very petite. However, I'm very dissatisfied with 2 things.
First, the screen size. I understand this device is smaller and the screen size should be smaller as well. But what's with the huge frame around the LCD. That boarder cuts down the screen size for at least a whole inch. (the boarders measures a little more than 1/2 inch each side left and ride, and a little more than 1/4 inch each side top and bottom) I see that the wifi and bluetooth LED are on the screen side boarder and I understand that some of the components might be built onto the frame of the LCD. But with Sony's engineering capability, I'm sure they can fit everything on the bottom (keyboard) side of the device. (maybe built-in the network components on the frame of the screen gives better reception, who knows)
Second, the cradle. If you use the extra AC adapter PEGA-AC10 or the car charger PEGA-DC10, the cradle is required! What's up with that! That means if I want to use it in the car and if I don't want to carry the cradle around, I will need to purchase a separate cradle for the car.
I'm an ex-NX70V (it was stolen) user so I'm comparing my experience. NX70V has a very satisfying screen size and the screen almost occupy the whole clam shell with very little boarder. When using the NX70V with AC10 or DC10, all it takes is a small plug adapter for it to charge.
I would consider these factors a major design flaw of the UX. |

| Gimme a break I got mine yesterday and haven't put it down since. I LOVE IT. MY FAVORITE PDA EVER and I've owned just about every one of them since 1990. This is my third new PDA this year and this one I'm keeping (for which my wife is grateful).

| On the point about the screen size, some here have noted that the border makes it easier to use in tablet mode in that it give you a place to hold the UX firmly without obscuring the screen with your fingers. Another thought I had was that given the size of the unit and that it's internal batter may not be as powerful or as high capacity as the one in other models like the NX70, it may also have been a power conservation feature. The smaller the screen (more to the point, the lighting element), the lesser the drain on the battery. There must be a reason, afterall, that one of the immediately available accessories from Sony themselves is an external battery.
As for the what you mentioned about the cradle, I would agree that that seems to be something not well thought out. I currently own an NX70V and do like the convenience of having that little adapter and only having to purchase an additional power supply to be able to both charge and, with the addition of a USB cable, hotsync both at the office and at home. There may be some reason for this design, too, though whatever it is, eludes me at this point. |

| It is incredible... Some people are doing tests for websites, there are people who are speaking and answering questions about the UX for a long time, the UX is in demo in nearly every shop and some people just discover it and see how it is working, what it looks like...
Come on... If you don't want to be surprised, just go and try it, ask questions, see tests...
What's the problem with you??

| ...someone'll come out with a charger plug that doesn't require the cradle...
...I hope...
...before I buy one... |

| I love my UX-50, I just took it on a day trip (out and back on two flights) and the charger/cradle is the only sticking point. I don't get it at all.
Fine, fine - you want a cradle for the charge connectors so you can sell us an extended battery that just clips on. OK, I can understand that. The UX slips easily onto the cradle, and the whole package is still pretty small. I can live with that. The power supply is ridiculously large, but I can certainly imagine an aftermarket fix there.
What really gets me is you make all these compromises on how we charge the thing, and then the sync cable is a separate connection! What the hell? So now you lose all the advantages of the cradle (just drop it on the cradle when you get back to your desk for a top off) and have to make two connections every time you return?!?! And it's not like the USB cable is simple to attach, it's a pain. I'd much much rather they put the two connectors together, or at least have a connector so the cradle could be a real docking station. The way the USB is set up, I just don't see how someone can connect both at once. It may be possible to make a travel/charge cable (possible just to connect to the existing dock) and that will help.
To me, the whole situation shows that Sony was concentrating on making a standalone device. And looked at that way, the ergonomics are pretty great. Still with the battery life under the cool features (wireless, movies) you can't stray too far from the desk.

| I've been buying and selling PDA's since the Casio E-100 days ... I'm just in love with this little thing. The small footprint with a keyboard + wifi/bluetooth really has me sold. I thought the SE P800 was the end all be all solution to a PDA/Phone, but what i'm learning is that a all in one device usually only does one or two things REAL well and everything else is merely ok. The P800 is a KICKASS cellphone, but is just a ok PDA. Yeah.. it plays movies.. and yeah it takes pictures... and yeah you can play games on it... but not as well as a full featured PDA. I am more geared towards wireless connectivity to the internet. Writing email or chatting on the irc or peforming command line functions through SSH becomes a daunting task when you dont have a little thumb board. ANYWAYS.... I'm back to 2 devices. The UX50 fits very nicely in my front pocket and seems a hair lighter than my P800.
To each his own

| My theory is that Sony deliberately put in a few bugaboos so that when they finally fix them, they can tout the new design, everyone will ooh and aah, and go out and upgrade! They probably have a whole department committed to figuring out ways to maximize their bottom line. Sony be not dumb. |

| I just got my UX40, and I have to say that I am VERY UPSET!
First! It runs on Palm OS, why would it do this? Secondly, It has a clamshell design! I hate clamshell designs, why did they make mine with one? Third, it has a built-in keyboard! Why did they do this?!? They should have saved that space for a bigger screen!
I'm just kidding. I can't feel sympathy for people who buy what looks cool and sounds cool, but don't actually try out the product. Every gadget has its shortcomings, you just have to figure out if their ones you can live with! |

To be fair, I tried out a tonne of different PDAs before I bought the UX. I don't even want to think about how many hours of my life I lost to Best Buy and Circuit City. I tried the UX at I think 3 different CCs and not one of them whined.
