I changed the batteries in my SL10 (within a few seconds), but after switching it on it had done a hard reset, without any warning. There was even not the question "are you sure?" (or whatever you get with a hard reset). Did anyone have a similar experience? There was not much harm done, after a hotsync everything was back to normal. Just curious to find out what caused this hard reset. Could it be failure of the internal battery that keeps the PDA alive during changing batteries?

A friend of mine had the batteries die without ever receiving a battery warning. It's hard to guess why these things happen ... whether the failure is the batteries dying very quickly or the power monitoring circuits of the PDA not catching it.

A good reason to sync/backup often.

My wife used to have a Handspring Visor Deluxe, which uses 2 AAA batteries.  Once she hard reset hers by accidently putting the batteries in backwards (both, so the voltage was reversed).  That was one of the reasons that led to her getting a new PDA (Clie T615) with a built-in battery.

Yup, putting them in backwards will cause a hard reset.

At a party once - someone got a 'toy' which needed AAA batteries. I had 2 of them in my Palm IIIxe, which I volunteered for use, as long as I had them back in under 2 minutes. We pulled the batteries, played with the toy, and had them back in under 2 minutes… with NO data loss.

You should be able to have the batteries out for 60 seconds or so without it causing your device to reset. If not, you have a problem….

I didn't put in the batteries backwards; after exchanging batteries and switching on the device it started with the screen for calibrating the digitizer. With batteries backwards I would have not been able to switch it on at all. Later I found out that I did loose some stuff: all my custom categories in "To do" were gone...

Meanwhile, I have exchanged batteries again to test whether it was the internal battery. No problems this time, so it 's a mistery to me why this happened.
