Question Early Application Question

I realize the UX Series will not be out for a few weeks, but those who plan on getting it early, like me, may have some compatability questions with the landscape screen orientation. My hope is that someone may start a list that developers can frequent to keep us updated on what software will be compatible with the new units.

My primary apps that I would be hoping for immediate support are:
Bug Me
Contacts 4
DateBk 5
JFile 5
Memo & To Do Plus
Pocket Quicken
Splash Suite
Zagat

There are several others, but these are the primary day in and day out apps. While I am excited for the new unit and plan to buy one, I have some serious concerns about how the screen will display these apps.

Any ideas or comments, especially from developers, would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Sony tells us that all current apps should run fine in the 320x320 space, with the virtual Graffiti area extended. In that sense, they are compatible.

Or are you asking whether these apps will support the new landscape orientation?

Don't worry, all current Palm software will work fine on the new device.

Well, I am more concerned about these apps supporting the new landscpae mode.

While I realize that for DateBk 5.0 it will only expand the "time-line" horizontally and allow more text to fit onto one line, you lose the ability to see many hours of the day if you have multiple appts. But for something like Splash Photo, I have real concerns as to how to images are going to display. I have an NX series with a bunch of pics of my son and they really look terrific. If the virutal graffiti is in place and the entire picture can't display, that is gonna really be a problem.

Bottom line, we really will need a developer to create a "hack" that will allow the screen to rotate from landscape to portrait. Ed, while I understand that Sony is not handling this, do you think the unit as built is capable of handling this with the proper code?

Maybe this would make another great Clie Source contest???

I am really hopeful about this unit, but it would kill me to sacrifice image quality in the exchange.

Any ideas....

I think trying to make a hack to do a portrait mode would be a lot of work. You would have to get it so the system would draw everything at a 90 degree angle, so you would have to hack into the core of the OS. Probably not so hard if you were someone who had the inside details of the OS, or were only trying to do this with certain apps, but trying to do this system wide might be a little troublesome. Not saying that no one can do it, but it's still quite possible that it can't be done.

I'm planning to wait and see if using graffiti to the left side (I'm left-handed) of the display is a real nightmare (to be honest, I don't plan on using it much - I'm buying this for the keyboard). If so, such an app would be something I'd pay for. But someone here said they held a Sharp model (landscape) and it wasn't that bad to write on, so I'm going to hang in there and see how it really feels before I freak out about landscape-only mode. I sort of wonder if it's something Sony decided they couldn't implement in time for release, or did the people who designed the UX come to the conclusion that it isn't necessary...

Exclamation flip/rotate

Note that there exist FlipHack and FlipGrafittiHack for the mono 160x160 screens. FlipHack allows the screen to be rotated in increments on 90 degrees. FlipGrafittiHack rotates the Grafitti area accordingly. Left-handed people rejoiced!

I ran these two on my Visor for a couple of years with no problems. I actually preferred my Visor in landscape orientation. I found it quite natural to hold in my hand.

Note though, that both these hacks do not work on HiRes displays (I tried) . So the concept of rotating/flipping the screen is a technical possibility.
