Reason for wide border?

Does anyone know if their is a reason for the wide border around the ux-screen. Is read is could be for the antenna, is that true?

My guess would be smaller screen = cheaper and uses less battery life. Plus there may be some electronics crammed up in there - judging by the capabilities of this tiny thing.

yeah, power consumption could be a main cause for the smaller screen. Also the wireless antennas within could be another reason. Have you taken a look at the plastic mock of the UX50?
Hope that eventually they'll make a bigger screen.

To be honest... the "apparant" wasting of screen real estate (given that the NR's, NX's and NZ's all have the same screen size more or less) is what makes the UX's not look that exciting to me.

I've gotten so spoiled by my original NR's size and now my NZ's size that anything smaller just isn't the same...

I forgot about the plastic mock. Did it have all the electronics in it? I wonder - if not it might not show what's really around the screen (there's *no* way a wireless antenna is that thick around the screen - that would be ridiculous - look at most PCMCIA card Wifi antennae). I still primarily suspect power drain, and I see cost as a major driver as well - people are upset at how expensive this thing is (I don't really see it given all the functionality that's built-in, but then again this PDA was pretty much designed for me by apparently-telepathic Sony engineers) - adding a ~4" screen is likely to top $800.

From a supply chain perspective, there's always a chance that there are quality or availability concerns - if possibly only given projected demand - hard to say. I do like the little Wifi/BT lights, too bad they couldn't have used the space for more buttons/indicators of some sort (on a future model with portrait, maybe a graffiti area...) heh. Speculation is grand.

Hmm. Is that a view from the back, though?
Edit:

Now I'm looking more closely at this thing, with what I really hope is some robust hardware on the swivel joint, there isn't too much room vertically for the screen. I wonder if there are limitations on widely-available screens with given dimensions, such that this one was just the best fit currently available. If you wanted to go bigger, you'd lose the "underbite" of the jog dial and the 3 application buttons when the unit is closed (tho I'd have preferred that anyway) - not clear if that's a feature or a side effect of the smaller screen, though. I haven't had this much fun in a long time...

Nice... So technically there is no reason for a bigger screen in the next version.
To see if it's _too_ small i guess i'll have to wait until it appears in shops.

Not neccessarily, though - it sort of depends on how you treat the overall size of the unit and the size of the top part of the clamshell. There's certainly some flexibility there, though JackAxe just posted an interesting image on a new thread...once I understand what he did I'm sure it'll be clearer.(thanks JackAxe!) It's likely Sony will tweak it based on reviews/sales/comments, if indeed the design succeeds enough to warrant further development.

looking at the picture, the battery is driving the length of the unit... looks very similar to the one in the ipaq...

Just a thought.

I wonder if the border around the screen is there to allow the unit to be held when you have the screen flipped over for non-keyboard use?

If the unit is too wide to be held in your palm like previous Clie's, then the unit could be held in one hand by placing your thumb on the border, with your index finger supporting the back of the unit.

hmmm good point kitfreak.

Then again if Sony had given us Portrait view and hardkey buttons we wouldn't have this problem! >=( Closed, the UX could have been held like a normal NR/NX series, which doesn't have much of a huge border around the screen.

THe border just seems so thick! Sony could have a) made the keyboard smaller to match the smaller screen and have an entirely smaller UX series, or b) sony could have simply just made the screen bigger.

dah. Don't worry guys, you'll have everything you want in the UX60

yeah, I'd definitely upgrade for a new OS6.
