I didn't know that they made land-line phones any more. My grandma has one down in the basement, but I there is never an answer when I turn the crank.

Try the psion travel modem, i've got one and use it for email and web browsing, it works via a normal phone socket in the wall, runs at 56k and saves your mobile bill.

The original post makes me ask this question: can we ever realistically hope to get a CF 56k landline modem for the Clie NX series?

In the past when I've thought of Sony not providing drivers for the CF slot, I wasn't too upset because I'm not that much into the wireless thing. (Not yet anyway). But thinking about a landline CF modem has me excited and annoyed with Sony at the same time. I can imagine how handy this thing would be for checking email and surfing the web. It would allow me to leave my laptop at home when I'm not traveling on business.

I've been looking at some for PPC and I'm having serious gadget envy!

Interestingly, I just found a review of the Sony Clie NR Series Communications sled over at The-Gadgeteer.com (http://www.the-gadgeteer.com/pega-cf70-review.html).

This sled is desiged to allow the use of CF modems, though not CF memory cards. The problem with this one is that the driver is written in Japanese, as its only sold in Japan. Is this a sign that perhaps Sony will let other CF cards play with is CF slot? Oh, now I'm even more annoyed!

There was a thread here before the crash that discussed CF modems on the NX. There a a few that work, and there was an app that was required for it too. So there are some CF modems that work, but I'm not sure as to which ons they are.

Ive had a Psion modem for over 18 months. It worked with my M505, T615 and now my T665. I do not have much use for a cell phone other than for emergencies so it works great for me. Just plut it into the phone wall socket and line up the I/R ports and away you go. I got mine on ebay for $45.

I've heard that with such a POTS modem, you have to be careful not to hook up to a digital phone line (many hotels, business) because you can fry the modem.

Any truth to this? If so, how can you know for sure if a phone line is digital or analog?

No truth to that at all. I have hooked up at home and on the road in motels and at resorts while on vacation. Never a problem.

Zipman, is the Psion modem you had a CF modem, or is it the one that communcates via IR port?
