#1 | | Guest | I hate Graffiti 2 Man, why didn't Palm just pony up some money to Xerox?
I just got my NX80V, and I love it! (upgrading from a T615C, thank you, CompyUSA!)
BUT.
I haaaaaaate Graffiti 2!
Is there a hack or utility that will put back the original Graffiti?
Thumb board is ok, but I'm much faster with Graffiti. (been using it since original Palm Pilot)

| What are the differences between Graffiti 1 and 2 that are causing you to slowdown?

I've heard TealScript recommended but haven't had a chance to use it myself. |

| Yep, TealScript. I'm trying it out for now... *Much* better than G2.
So far, it's even better than G1 because you can train it to understand the way *you* write. I've only been using it for a short while, and haven't really looked into any advanced features, but I'm faster now than ever.

| Graffiti 2 is worse because it requires 2 motions for a few letters. So it takes twice as long for i, t, and k. There may be more but those are the worst for me. I'm starting to get used to decuma though. |

| Tried G2 on the T|C - hated it. But I thought the NX was coming with the original G1 as well as G2

I see why now. I'm so used to writing "t" like upside down L and "k" like Greek's letter alpha, so I guess I'll have problem with G2 too..

| Put me down with the haters. I've used Palm devices with Graffiti for almost 6 years, so the G2 on my new NX80 is a royal pain. Why couldn't they have put in an option to allow you to use the older style characters?? How hard could that have been??
Just another case of trying to fix something for new users and in the process COMPLETELY ignoring your installed user base. |

| One of the reasons Palm went with G2 instead of the original in the new releases of the OS was the Xerox lawsuit, so if they had made an option to use the original Graffiti characters, they would have run afoul of Xerox again.
As far as G2 goes, I haven't used it yet, but I have been using Jot (which G2 is based on) for a few years now. While it's true that it takes 2 strokes to write some characters, there are some definite advantages :
1. The characters are much more like how most people print on paper.
2. No more need for a capitalization stroke. Lower-case letters are written on the left-hand side, numbers on the right, and capital letters in the center.
3. The ability to write symbols and other special characters pretty much just as you would on paper, with UPSTROKE SYMBOL UPSTROKE. This is one of the best things about it for me. I was constantly forgetting the Graffiti strokes for some symbols, and having to look them up.
As far as ignoring their user base goes, it's not primarily that. It's much more about the lawsuit, and their decision not to license from Xerox (and I'm sure they would have passed that license fee right along to the consumers as well!). G2 may take some getting used to, but in the long run, I think it's more natural, and closer to printing on paper (which is a good thing). |

G2 must have removed some options from what Jot was. Because I have Jot configured for one stroke I's, T's and K's. I went into Tuner and set the L to be the large L instead of a single stroke. That turns I into a single stroke. You can configure T to be either the old grafiti style T, which I hate because then you have to do multiple strokes to do apostrophe. I unchecked all three options and I can write the T as a verticle line down, diagonally to the left, then to the right. I do K as a lowercase cursive K. These seem to work fine for me. I like not having to do multiple strokes to do the @ symbol (which I use frequently) or the apostrophe.
I'd like to try out Decuma, but my device doesn't support it.

| Thanks for the info, swangner. I was totally unaware that Xerox had sued Palm over Graffitti. I still don't like G2, but I'm not PO'd at Palm anymore.
Now I'm PO'd at Xerox. |
