MP3s at Low bitrate...

Hey all,

I would like to encode some mp3s to a VERY low bitrate. Essentially lectures. I'm thinking Mono, sample rate 16kbit/s, bitrate 8kbit/s or so. I want to be able to fit as much as possible on one 128Mb MS.

The Audio Player app only supports 44.1+. Any other options besides ajvmp3 (it doesn't seem to play anything that Audio player won't)?

Thanks.
Brandon

The sample rate of 44.1KHz is a limitation of the MP3 hardware in the clié, not the software interface. The exception to this is OS5 cliés which decode in software and have no such limitation (although I understand the audio player supplied with the NX won't even play VBR encoded files, so appears more limited than the hardware decoders).

For minimum filesize, you'll have to record your MP3s in mono at 44.1 KHz, and the lowest bitrate you can manage (32kbps I'm guessing?).

Yup, that's about the size of it.

As I mentioned in another thread, try the music converter at,

http://www.dbpoweramp.com

You will be able to convert your file quickly and painlessly to a variety of formats until you find one that is small enough for your needs, but still of adequate quality.

I second the suggestion for dbpoweramp. I used it to convert 16 audiotapes to mp3's using the lowest possible settings playable on the Clie (32kbps, mono, don't remember the rest - check the technical specs) Each 30 minute side of voice audio converted to between 5 and 9 MB. Thirty-two mp3 files equalling 16 hours of voice audio came to 188 MB. Works out to about 11 or 12 hours of audio per 128 MB memorystick.

There are also programs out there that will "speed up" a .wav file by a certain percentage, at the cost of the voices sounding like chipmunks

Yup, that's what I ended up doing. Works pretty well, too. 44.1, 32, mono.

Thanx, but I love Easy CD-DA Extractor, and the file converter fits the ticket fine.

hard to believe that the decoder chips can't downsample. Eh, whatever.

Thanx all.
