My experience with VCD movies on a clie !

on tuesday, i tried to convert a 500 mb (animatrix CD 1) vcd disc to fit into my PDA's memory stick, since i have read about it before in one of the forums. I tried it first by converting the VCD *.DAT file to MPEG, that took close to an hour. Next, I used Sony's Image Converter software to convert the MPEG format to Sony's proprietary Movie Player format, *.MQV. There are 3 settings to choose from, High Quality, Standard and Long Mode.

I tried the High Quality setting first and it produced a 130 mb file. Won't fit my 128 mb stick. (available memory = 123.5 mb)

Next tried the Standard Mode. Produced a 123 mb file. Won't fit my other applications.

Decided to try my luck with Long Mode. It produced a file with a 49 mb file ! I couldn't believe it, so i did a second conversion. Again it was 49 mb ! how cool was that ! I quickly transferred the file into my Clie and turned on the Movie Player...

The Original resolution was quite small. 1/4 of the total screen size. But when i press the Fit to Screen button, it just fits nicely.

The quality is quite good. No degradations in audio. Though i think the movie brightness and playback frame rate is compromised a bit. But its quite cool.

Yesterday, I tried a conversion of a chinese movie to my clie, standard mode produced a 91 mb file. looks very good on the pda screen, audio also excellent. I watched the whole vcd before i went to sleep last nite, the power only dropped 9% for an hour worth of the movie and misc. games before that. Think the power consumption ratio is very good, even with the backlight on for a full hour and the processor + memory stick running.

very stim. i will soon attempt to fit in 2 vcds inside, at the lowest conversion rate to save space. hope to get 40 + mbs for each file.

this pda still continues to give me surprises such as this ! i would say its so much better than the palm tungsten, in terms of multimedia capabilities.

did I hear The Animatrix?
I've one episode of "The final Flight of the Osiris" in MoviePlayer HighQulity format 36MB! running off my 256MB SanDisk CF like a charm.

ScottM, have you got any plans to put that movie up on like an FTP or something? would surely like some pre-made files and judging from your comments it's quite a piece of work!
Standard Mode. Produced a 123 mb file. sounds nice to me!

I converted the "The final Flight of the Osiris" in MoviePlayer at HQ too. 36 MB MQV. I did it through my Powerbook Titanium and to MQV by emulation through VirtualPC.

Here's how:
DVD to MQV Encoding

Forty-Two 1.5.2
Encode to DivX1 format
Use Filename.avi

ConvertToQt
Open Filename.avi and Generate mov/mp3
New file created is Filename.mov and Filename.mp3

Amadeus II
To increase volume, open Filename.mp3
and adjust in Amadeus II (Normalize 90% and Amplify)
Save Audio setting as Wav
Save file name Filename.wav
Import into Filename.mov before Export

QuicktimePro 6.0
Open Filename.mov
Import Filename.wav
Select All, copy and Add Audio into FIlename.mov

Export Movie with following settings

Video Format as Sorenson Video 3
Colours Millions+
Make necessary Brightness/Contrast settings

Audio Format as uLaw 2:1

Save final as Filename.mov

Convert final MOV file with ClieConverter to MQV

It gives excellent result. If there is an easier way on a Mac, I'd like to hear it.

you really toke that to the extreme... all I used was VirtualDub with DivX codec plug-in. I suppose your version would be of much better quality!

To convert VCD's .dat files to .mpg files, I recommend using VCDGear. It is a freeware that allows you to convert the .dat files directly to .mpg files without re-encoding. Note that .dat files are actually .mpg files with additional overhead, so what VCDGear does is actually just to strip out all the additional data giving you a clean .mpg file.

i am using

TMPGEnc Version 2.57.41.146

just click 'next' all the way. conversion time is 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the file.

next, i just convert the mpg to mqv. 30 - 45 minutes

discovered that i can view MQV's in Quicktime 6. cool eh ? just rename the extension to MOV.

my ppc buddies are jealous .. hahahahaha
