| NX70 Screen Transplant Is it possible for an end user to replace the screen? If it is possible to replace the screen does anyone have a dead NX60 (I guess the screens are the same) or NX70 they would be willing to part with? What is a dead/crippled NX70 worth?
The screen on my wife's NX70 was fractured in her purse yesterday. The unit functions and the screen is visible but the fracture lines make parts of the screen impossible to read. We had purchased the Best Buy 2 year replacement plan but it seems as though the screen is not covered. I was very dissapointed but at least BB refunded part of our service contract.

It all depends on which store and how persistent you are. Yes, Sony wants $150.00+ to replace the LCD screen. I don't know if replacing it yourself is an easy task, you could very easily end up with a FUBAR. For the purchase price of a used Clie, I would think you'd be better off sending it to Sony. Call them first and they'll send you a box 1-877-760-7669.
Sorry about your misfortune

| Sounds like just the digitizer top glass is broke and not the actual LCD screen. I have replaced several on an old N760 series, but I haven't found the part available for the NX series. I don't think they are offered for after market, yet. |

p2p?
BestBuy held firm that they would not replace a unit with a broken screen. They indicated that the damage looked as though it was caused by an impact. I would have to agree but without a witness my wife does not know how it happened. The NX was in my her purse. I suspect that a pen or something snuck in between the keyboard and screen while closed in clamshell mode and stressed the glass.
Well, to repair the unit Sony quoted $188.79 (shipping and tax included) with a 7-10 day turn-around.
I wish the NX80 was available in the US. I would replace my wifes NX70 without hesitation. Well, guess I will get the NX repaired for half the cost of a new one. Bummer.
Thanks for your replies.

| I've replaced alot of lcd's on laptop and even early palm IIIC and even a 760c. Not too difficult. However swivel screens usually use a plastic/ruber gasket for the screen that when poped can no longer be used and has to be replaced. Although I have never done a pilot, this is the case with camcorders with similar flipping screens. Chances are you will pop the screen open, and not be able to set the flip hinge back in place afterwards.
Anyone actually work with the NR/NX series?

| hi,
Try to get a NR70 or NX70 or NX60 and replace the screen with it. I have repaced not only screen but also batteries and a faulty CF slot of my NX 60. You just need to be patient. I gues get proper tools and try it on the next weekend. You can get a dead NX/NR in E-bay for 20-90 bucks.

Not everyone can do it. So I let the individual decide if they are capable. It's delicate work and you are also handling a static sensitive device. Patience, a good eye, and steady hand are a must!

i did infact do a screen transplant on my nx70 ...with a screen from nr70 and its very easy.. there is nothing difficult about it..
only thing you have to be careful of is the ribbon connector in the top centre and the two cables connector on each side of the top part of screen.. if you use a magnifying glass and a very fine flat mouth screw driver there should be no problems!
good luck | |

| I'm pretty sure that is doen by a magnetic sensor in the swivel. Magnet on left side do this. magnet of right side do that. it's what they use in their camcorers and cell phones. Dunno why they would do difently.

It maybe easy for you or I, but not everyone is adept in doing so.

#15 | | Guest | A couple of years ago I bought a new NR70 at Best Buy. The Sales Guy convinced me to buy the Performance Service Plan which I reluctantly did. Boy was I glad. A few months later the screen became loose at the swivel. I took it back to Best Buy and they upgraded me to the NX70 because the NR70 was no longer available. I ended up having to exchange the NX70 two times which they did without a hitch. The last time, I upgraded my exchange to the NX80 and extended the service Plan. Believe it or not, I had to return that one shortly afterwards because I dropped it and the hinge became loose and woldn't close.. They swapped it without a problem. That was two months ago. Last friday I was standing outside of the place where I was working writing an appointment onto my PDA when a person accidently bumped into me causing me to drop my Clie onto the sidewalk.
Well I guess it hit just right because the glass underscreen shattered with the impact point being right above the camera wiht spider cracks running up the whole screen. My heart sank because I had read on this board that broken screens wouldn't be covered on the Best Buy Service Plan. Sure enough, the Tech Guy refused my reqeust to use the Service Plan to replace the unit. They insisted that broken screens were not covered. No matter who I talked to the answer was always no and that I'd have to send it to Sony to get it fixed....Oh man needless to say I was and continue to be lost... The NX80 had become a very important part of my work life like a part of my right hand... and now it's been amputated.
Anyone know where I can get the screen replaced? Or is Sony my only choice? | |
