This guide will hopefully help you to disassemble your UX50 without damaging it.

PLEASE TAKE UTMOST CARE WHEN YOU ATTEMPT THIS FOR YOURSELF AS THE UX50 IS A FRAGILE PIECE OF TECHNOLOGY AND SHOULD ONLY BE ATTEMPTED IF YOU FEEL YOU ARE COMPETENT ENOUGH AND HAVE THE RIGHT TOOLS. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU DAMAGE YOUR UX50 IN THE PROCESS OF DIS-ASSEMBLY. PLEASE, GO SLOWLY WHEN DIS-ASSEMBLING, PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE.

That said, you shouldn't have too much trouble. OK here goes....

1) First off find a clean flat area to perform surgery and collect the tools you'll need. These include a small flat head screwdriver for prying apart various pieces of the UX, a small Phillips head screwdriver and a 5 point star screwdriver to remove the back cover. You may also need plastic wallets/bags to keeps the screws in so you don't lose them and so you know which screw goes where. You will also need a pair of needle nose pliers





2) Remove the screw at the top of the UX by the camera capture button.





3) Remove the four star screws from the back cover of the UX. Place the screws in a bag/wallet and put to the side.





4) Carefully pull off the cover about half a centimetre away from the body and rotate it 90 degrees anti clockwise and let it rest. DO NOT TOUCH THE MOTHERBOARD WHILE THE BATTERY IS STILL CONNECTED.





5) Carefully pry out the speaker connector using the small flat head screwdriver. You have now removed the back cover. Put it to the side along with the bag of screws that were removed. DO NOT TOUCH THE MOTHERBOARD WHILE THE BATTERY IS STILL CONNECTED.








6) Unscrew the battery cover. Put the screw and the cover to the side (bag/wallet). Remove the battery. DO NOT TOUCH THE MOTHERBOARD WHILE THE BATTERY IS STILL CONNECTED.








7) Remove the 3 screws shown in the pics below which hold the charging contacts/ memory stick/ usb parts. Put the screws in a bag.







8) Pry the usb port up using the flat head screwdriver; it may be stuck down with double sided tape. Also pull off the motherboard connector above the usb port. Peel back the tape and pull the flat cable away from the motherboard.








9) Pull out or pry out the memory stick reader. It is stuck down with double sided tape so don't be afraid of pulling with more force.





10) Remove two of the three motherboard connectors near the camera module. The connector in the rectangle has a latch that needs to be flipped up to release the flat cable, do this with the flat head screwdriver. Pull out the other cable shown in the circle. Be careful as the wires are very thin. Leave the other 4 wire connector. Pull out the white wire cable (in the circle) using pliers.

11) Remove the two screws on the motherboard and put away.





12) Pry off the keyboard/button and the microphone connector at the bottom of the UX with the flat head screwdriver. Remove the screwdriver underneath and put it with the other two removed earlier.








13) Tilt the motherboard up and away from the body, this will give you extra room to pull out the 4 wire connector.




14) Turn over the motherboard. Using the flat head screwdriver on the corner of the connector, carefully pry away the pink connector away from the motherboard. Don't use too much pressure; instead wiggle the screwdriver until you get between the interfacing connector. Once one side is almost free you can pull it out by hand.









15) Turn over the motherboard and repeat step 14 for the yellow connector. You have now removed your motherboard. Put it aside with the screws you removed from it.








16) Pull the black latch away from the beige connector port to release the flat cable. Remove the screw holding the 3.5mm audio jack. Using the flat head screwdriver, carefully pry away the jack from the UX50 body, the cable should come loose on its own but if it doesn't, try pulling the black latch away from the beige connector port and then pulling the flat cable. Put it aside along with the screw












17) Remove the screws in the chassis. Remove the chassis along with the keyboard, buttons, silver side parts and the 3 very small led plastic. Put these parts aside.




















18) Open the screen. Remove the two screws holding the screen to the keyboard casing. Tilt the screen up as shown to remove the screen from the keyboard cover. Put the parts aside.

















19) Remove the screws holding the camera module to the casing and put aside. Remove the camera end cap; it is only stuck on with double sided tape.








20) Remove the camera module. Unscrew the screw on the end to separate the camera module in to its constituent parts.

21) {OPTIONAL} Remove the tape joining the casing to the plastic cap and push out {OPTIONAL}








22) Back to the screen; rotate the screen 90 degrees and remove the screws on the hinge plastics.





23) Using your flat head screwdriver, pry apart the plastic from the chassis in the place shown in the pic. Likewise, repeat this on the other side and remove the half cover. Similarly, repeat this for the other half. Put these pieces aside along with the screws.













24) Remove the 4 screws from around the screen casing and put aside. Pull apart the covers a little and pull the dark grey screen cover away in a parallel direction to the outer silver screen cover.










25) Flip the latch holding the flat cable and pull out the cable. Remove the screw and put aside along with the light board and bluetooth/wireless plastic.










26) Remove the screws from the other screen circuit board. Flip the latch on the small and large flat cable and pull them out. Flip the latch and move the other small flat cable. Put all these parts and screws aside.









27) You have finished dis-assembling your UX; time for a break.

Excellent step-by-step job procedures & pictures. Just make sure you don't touch the motherboard before you disconnect the battery.

Thanks DanT, i've updated the guide to include your suggestion. Yes it is an ikea table, its my brothers, i had to use his because mine is still covered in circuit boards and other crap. I really should clean my desk

Well it gets easier to take apart electronics with experience. I started taking apart toys first when i was younger, like rc cars and invariably wrecked them. But now, having had experience of taking apart computers, phones, consoles, laptops, tvs, pdas, microwaves, washing machines and loads of other stuff, i've become adept at it. Now whenever i buy a new electronic gizmo, my instinct is to take apart.

But i still haven't taken apart my psp........yet

Me too, as you can tell. I just can't resist the temptation. Once my iPhone 2-year warranty is out, I'll take it apart. That's what I did with my PDAs.

Where can I get a screwdriver so I can remove the 5-point screws in the case? I've got a new battery to put in, but can't get the case apart. Thanks.

There are some sellers on ebay who deal in the 5-point screwdrivers but the one I got was the wrong size anyway! Personally I would suggest a tiny flat-bladed screwdriver like those you get for repairing spectacles as that seems to work fine if you are careful
