| Standalone use of the Pre may NOT work. I just read this over at PalmInfocenter. I'm going to look further in the forums area of PreCentral. But the upshot is that without a carrier service plan in effect on a Pre, it may not function at all. Here is a link to the article <http://www.palminfocenter.com/news/9907/using-a-webos-device-without-active-service/>. I have been waiting specifically for an unlocked GSM Pre, so I can continue to use my non-data plan service with AT&T. If this story pans out, I may be staying with my Treo 680 indefinitely. What a bone-headed thing for Palm to do! (Just my opinion). |

The German GSM Pre will come unlocked. It will have a QWERTZ keyboard (Z and Y swapped) but otherwise its pretty much a Pre. Firmware updates may come later though but as far as I know the language can be changed to english (seen from the emulator). Ordering mine when its released tomorrow . |

| But are you getting a data plan? Or are you planning on using WiFi and then as a phone only? I'd really like to know if this works on a non-Sprint phone. |

I use my own Prepaid service, which depending on my usage may include phone/internet when I need it. For other stuff including updates and the occasional night-time browsing I will use Wi-Fi. As long as you have a GSM Provider it should work. I will update you guys once my unit arrives which should be by the end of the week. |

| Alright, just got my Pre. However I am having huge issues with the machine randomly rebooting, even after I use WebOS doctor to reflash the device. Looks like I might have a Hardware defect so I will see what can be done. Anyway, here are three issues you might encounter if you were to import the device into the states:
1. You will need a GSM network (don't know how good the coverage is there)
2. The Z and Y keys are swapped and they seem hardwired, so you will have to deal with that somehow.
3. One of the possibly biggest problems is the profile activation which may check whether you are in europe to activate the device. Not sure about that one though so I suggest looking through the net for more info. |
