speaker mod?

Has anyone tried replacing their LD speaker with a better one? I like playing music on mine sometimes without having to wear earphones but it sounds kind of crappy. Can it theoretically be done? I was thinking that all I need was to find a speaker that fit in the case, that takes the same amount of power as the current one, and possibly have to solder or splice the old connector on to the new speaker (I can't remember how it's connected off the top of my head.) Or is there more to it than that?

Thanks in advance! :-)

Yes. To the best of my recall the speaker is a standard coil technology speaker, I would assume 8 or 4 ohms.

May be tricky, as the existing speaker is quite small. You may find that any speaker of that size has about the same audio quality.

Actually you want the same impedance (e.g. 8 ohms), and can handle the same power or greater (e.g. if the current speaker is a half watt, you could use a 1 watt).

The existing speaker has wires to a connector that connects to the mother board, so cut those wires and solder to the new speaker.

Note: In testing other speakers for better audio quality, you may think you have found one until you actually put it into the device. Some of the poor quality may be coming from the structural design of the LD; the metal casing and the very little air space behind the speaker.

Might be simpler/better to just get a small external speaker that plug into the headphone jack.
