Well, I've done it again. I've broken my second Palm-branded hard case for the lifedrive. They've both broken in exactly the same place, on the front, in the upper-left corner. The plastic is weakest there, and a hard fall will snap it. I'm getting another hard case, but not Palm this time. I believe it's Innpocket. It has two slots for SD cards in the lid, and the Ebay page says that its lid flips all the way around. I haven't had it in my hands, and I'm curious if the cover does flip all the way around, and what hard cases others have used.
I'm still using the Palm original aluminum hard case. I've dropped it several times and it has protected it well. I have used the clear plastic case for the Palm TX but that didn't hold up very well.
Don't get me wrong, I love the original aluminum case. But the two I've had have broken in exactly the same place. That is where they are weakest, and a fall onto exactly that point damages the case (though thankfully, not the lifedrive). I suppose its like a car that protects its passengers inside. The car is totaled, but at least its passengers are ok.
I've had an all aluminum case for a few years and it has done its job through several drops. Doesn't have a brand on it, but I just picked one with a good, look, couple SD slots and good price. Had a Proporta for another Palm and it was excellent too.
