| My New Nokia N810 Hi all!
I was able to talk my dear husband into giving me my Nokia N810 early So I thought I'd post a couple of screenshots...
Here's my desktop
And here's a shot of eReader in GVM, not perfect but definately readable...

| That looks great! Keep us posted on your experiences, I'm very interested to know if it's a possible Tx replacement...
By the way, Podshow is having a promotion for Nokia where you get a discount of around $50 on a new N810. They will be giving the discount codes in their podcasts, so if you want to buy one you might want to hold out for a bit.

| As a satisfied N800 user I can say that internet tablets are a great addition, but still not a replacement for a PalmOS device. Screen is excellent, browsing experience - superb, having a working Skype solution was the reason i get it, and document reading is OK. However, PIM is very limited /at least/ compared to PalmOS, 3rd party alternatives and programs are also nor comparable to POS, and the lack of portrait mode still wonders me.....
IMVHO it is a great internet-oriented device - but still can't be a primary device |

Its because the two systems (PDAs and UMPCs/Internet Tablets) are designed with different usages in mind.
A PDA is designed around "portrait mode" because it is aimed to emulate a paper agenda.
UMPCs/ITs are designed to functionally replace PCs (to a certain extend) and since PC's have been in "landscape mode" the follow the design.
For example, PDAs started doing landscape only when they gained on-line capabilities, since the internet is supposed to be seen in "landscape mode". |

| I've only had my N810 for a day... but so far I love it!! Setup was easier than I thought it would be - just download all the application catalogs and start trying out apps
The pdf reader is great! It is able to open any pdf I tried so far - even the 35mb one that I couldn't open in my TX. Fbreader is great for my plethora of existing Plucker doc, as well as Palm docs (non-DRMd) & html.
The web experience is great! It is so awesome to be able to multi task!! I even sometimes forget that I can do it :P
I'm still getting used to the keyboard... I miss my atomik keyboards.
I donlt really notice a difference in the PIMs, probably because I didn't use 3rd party apps & the maemo versions are as good as the builtin Palm apps, if not better. Email & Chat is better IMHO.
If you have any specific questions, let me know, it's hard to decide what to report.

| The only thing I miss is Passwords Plus. I need a good password manager in order to completely drop the Palm. It won't install in GVM, unfortunately, so that's not an option for now. I'm running it on my EeePC in Wine, but can't get it to work yet on my N800. Still looking... |

I understand and agree with that. However, Nokia knows better than anyone that certain tasks /contacts management , or even reading / are probably easier in portrait mode. Even not to mention that usually 'landscape' and 'one-handed operation' are somewhat contradictory. | @Sgosnell - FWIW, I've been able to install SplashID under GVM. I haven't had a chance to input any of my passwords yet. I know you are probably wanting to sync it with your desktop though... In theory it should work but I don't hotsync and haven't in a couple of years so I can't test it out for you.
@Sasmount - I'm using GPE calendar and contacts and To-Do. There's also a nice GPE summary applet for the desktop (although I'm not using it/don't need it). What am I missing that the builtin Palm apps did that these don't?

| Possibility to define type of field /e.g. if you'd like to have 4 e-mail addresses and no fax/.
Custom fields.
Sorting options.
And - just for the protocol - GPE contacts is a 3rd party program The built-in suffers in many more aspects.
Don't get me wrong - if it works OK for you - that's just fine. I personally need linking - and as there is still now such an option on Maemo AFAIK plus that there are some more 'meat-dishes' in contacts management with POS - so N800 is great for 'internet-oriented' tasks |

| Can you get palm apps like planetarium ( http://www.aho.ch/pilotplanets/) to work? Because I saw there isn't a decent one for the Nokia. Its making me hesitate about it (that and the PIMs).

| Does the N800 support Graffiti-style input, or is it screen keyboard only?
And how's the keypad on the N810? |

| @sasmount - You speak the truth about what GPE can & cannot do. As, I already said, I'm not a PIM power user so I haven't noticed any downsides from my usage. In fact the GPE calendar has a nicer Month-view than builtin Palm's. And yes I realize that GPE is a 3rd party software, but it is FREE and AFAIK, builtin Palm PIMs are the only free PIM apps around.
@guysoft - Yes GVM will install and run Planetarium Here's a screenshot for ya...
@Cyker - Yes, there is graffiti like on screen handwriting recognition. It's smarter than Palm's graffiti in the following ways: a) it brings up the graffiti or keyboard (which ever you select) when you tap on an entry box and only if the keyboard is closed - I imagine that it would do it anytime for the N800. Then when you're done, it goes away and leaves you full screen; b)You can "teach" it your handwriting so you could go in and teach it recognize all characters in the old Graffiti 1 style of writing c)some special characters are available; c) just like in the palm DIA area it's easy to switch between input methods.
The slide out keyboard is nice. I'm still getting used to thumb entry - I've never used a thumb board before I'm definitely getting better though. I do like it for posting to forums or writing emails. However, for lots of text entry, I have ordered an IGo Bluetooth Stowaway keyboard - only $30 w/ free shipping on Amazon.

| Hi:
Could you comment on Palm apps you're able to use as well as those that won't work?
Thanks,
Tom |
