Finally did a DSLITE battery mod

Hello all !

I finally got my old UX50, and as the battery was very weak, i managed to replace it by a Nintendo DSLite one. It's 1000mAh, so it should give a little bit more juice than a new 850mAh one.

First, i had to take away some black plastic around the DS battery to make it smaller. After, I simpy wrapped it with some adhesive tape and solded the original battery's cable to the DSLite battery's connectors.

Then I performed the USB charging mod to be able to charge the battery trough USB, but, doing this, i managed to remove the charging contact plate, by removing the solder. Then, I cautiously folded the flat cable going to the charging plate in a way to place it just above the memorystick slot.

After that i removed the small wall near the stylus silo, to be able to fit the new battery, and especially the small green board, with something like safety systems.

As the new battery was a little bit thicker, i sanded the back of the unit, to make sure it will fit without problem.

And ... tadaaaaaaaaaaa !!!!

It works ... and it's practically invisible.
I still have to fill the hole where the charging cradle conectors were located.

Well ... i don't know if it specialy interesting, but i had fun doing this !

Anyway, be cautious if you want to do the same, i don't push you, i don't even suggest you could do the same ... it's your own choice, if anything bad happens ... don't come and cry to me (especially with lawyers).

very impressive, nicely done

so you are not going to use the cradle anymore for charging?

are you only going to use the usb for charging?

the next thing to do is to see how long it holds a charge

yes, i will only use USB for charging. I don't like this strange cradle, find it absolutely not convenient.

Now, it seems that it holds charge better than the old battery.

What software can I use to measure it ?

Thanks !

After finishing this mod, i fully chrged the unit and then discharged it to about 10%.
Then, i charged it, with BatteryTime checking the process. In 1 hour it came to the end, reaching 4.2 volts but the power LED was still orange, so i left it plugged and it needed about 2 more hours to turn definitively green. So it means about 3 hours charge, it seems normal to me.

I use a USB Apple iPod charger, giving me 1000mA output trough a USB port. And, this is very important, i use too a THICK USB cable, designed to give enough power to devices like external hard drives that drains their power from the computer's USB.

Well, now the battery discharge test is running ... more details in some hours ...

Well ...
I ran a battery test and the result is very very very disapointing : 2.8h !!!

Aaaaargh !

I find it very strange. So i wonder, maybe there is a problem with my modding. Maybe there is a kind of power leak somewhere ? I have to see if it's not a problem with the USB charging mod or if the battery have ennough isolation ...

Suggestions are welcome !

I had the same issue with my 3880mAh battery mod

The batteries didn't normalize with every charge. Being that you have one, did you check the discharge and charge voltage range (3.7~4.2v). If so, is there only two terminals on the battery or more? If there is more, then the other ones tell the device the voltage level the battery is at. This is dangerous because you could be overcharging or under-discharging the battery.

Dear JAmerican !
Thanks for your support !

Yes, my battery is only 2 pins, that's why i chose it.
The battery doesn't get warm, either in charge or in discharge.
BatteryTime reports 4.2v at the beginning and 3.7 at the end of the test.

But, when i am recharging the unit from 10% battery left, battery time reports 4.2 v and stops the charge test after about one hour. And then, i still have to wait 2 hours before the power led turn from orange to green. So it seems it's still charging until the battery gets really full ?

Interesting. Is the battery new or used? If its used, that could be the issue. My batteries were used. Did you like experience one day of amazing battery life and the rest sucked?

It could seriously be the way the UX charges batteries I bet.

The battery was just a litle bit used, it had something like 10 cycles, not more.

I charged the battery, and controlled the voltage with Fullpower.During the charge, Fullpower shows me a slowly increasing voltage and it needs about 3 hours to reach 415 volts. This result seems a lot more consistant than Batterytime results.

I will try to use the unit normally and controll the discharge with fullpower.

OK, second test, same thing, about only 2 hours discharge time with Battery time.
Even with better isolation, even after hard reset and charging the battery when the unit is off ...
So i put back the original battery, i'm charging it right now and will compare the discharge time ...

My mod now is ending in a miserable failure ... bouhouhouh !

Well, i placed back the original battery in the unit and charged it.
Then I ran the battery test and got just one hour discharge time (half the time of my ds lite mod).

So, i wonder, what is happening ?

how long should be the discharge time ?

hey, maybe you should try a little app called battery time, its by sony and loads of people have used it in the past and posted up their results so it would be easier to compare performance - just search the forums for battery time

you can find it at this link
http://www.geocities.com/amux50/utilities.html

on a completely different note - jamerican - can you do me a BIG favour and measure the dimensions of the eb40 you have - im really interested in the thickness and the height of the little clips - thanks

I would suggest learning a bit about the various battery technologies and the methods used to charge them. NiMh, LION, NiCad, and alkaline need different charging profiles to charge them efficiently and without damage. Running a USB charger directly into a battery that it was not designed to charge is rolling the dice. So a few google searches and also check out the Panasonic site for their description about battery charging - its a document of about 40 pages that is a detailed look at the more common battery technologies.
Good luck.
