| I can recharge my UX50 directly from the USB port...here's how I know many of you already know about this but for the newbies...
I found a website that has the procedure for adding 1 internal wire that turns your UX50 USB port into an actual recharger, just like the NX series, etc. can do. I have actually had this done and it is recharging perfectly from any computer or cigarette car recharger plug. The website is in japaneese but the pics are crystal clear and very elemental for anyone to follow. You should have a pencil point soldering iron and know about soldering before attempting this. If you don't think you can do it yourself, I have a phone number for the place I sent my UX50 to, in order to have it professionally done.
Again...THIS WORKS...it recharges the UX50 from your computer via a USB cord or from a USB car charger. Never have to worry again about recharging your UX50.
The website is: http://bbs.tompda.com/viewthread.ph...&extra=page%3D1
and the phone number in the US for the install job is:
1-877-760-7669

| I have been getting ready to take the plunge and do this mod. I am seeking feedback from those who already have. Have you had any problems? Does it automatically shut-off when fully charged? Other than the danger of frying your clie, has anyone had any issues? Do I need to be carefull about shorting out the clie when doing this mod?
Thanks in advance...

| I'm fairly cak-handed when it comes to practical tasks such as the USB mod so if I can do it, anyone can. That said, I have only soldered one end of the wire; the other is pushed into the rear of the USB port which works just as well.
The UX does automatically shut off when charging is complete as you are not bypassing the internal charging circuit, but instead adding an extra wire to the end of it.

| LOL, I remember this. I am amazed that BenBird's links still are alive and well. I didn't solder mine at all. I just stuck the wire in the opening above the white connector and the USB.

| Hi Guys,
Well, Ixle, you got a bit of feedback on this. Mine is soldered on both ends and works like a champ. It DOES shut off at the end of the recharge and alleviates the need for that special case with the USB recharger built in (which nobody can seem to find anymore). Once this mod is done, you have solved the bulk of your UX50 recharge problems.
Again, if you don't think you can do this yourself, call that number. It is for SONY in California and they will perform the operation within a week and get the unit back to you in fine shape for...oh I think it was something like $50 plus shipping...but don't quote me on that.

| Hi,
I am at work right now, so I can't check, but I think you are talking about the extended battery (EB-40), correct? That battery will NOT charge if you make the mod to the UX50 USB port and use the USB port to recharge the PDA. You will have to use the AC adapter or the DC adapter if you are in the car to recharge the battery. This mod is only for the UX50 battery. However, you can still recharge the UX50 and EB40 using the AC adapter sled.

| There is a thread somewhere on this forum about adding a USB port to the EB40 to allow charging that way too....

| Did you leave that helpful label inside your UX when you closed it up again?

| will this actually damage the pda or the battery in long term conditions? anyone verified if the USB provides the same voltage and current as the cradle to provide power to the unit and charge the battery? |

It wouldn't hurt anything, would it?

I have done it with my TH55 for the last 3 years and it's still chugging along just fine. It is very convenient to carry just that short and stubby USB-CLIE adapter.
USB gives 5.0 VDC, while PEGA-AC10 gives 5.2 VDC. So it is actually safer to charge your CLIE via USB. However, it will take longer charging time since it is 0.2 VDC lesser charging power than AC10.
Also I just won this retractable USB-mini USB adapter for UX.
