| Just so you know, my JC40 has had the Sony charging socket removed and a standard full-size female USB socket fitted for charging. I think the same is for Hippo's original mod so you may even get away without including the Sony socket (see his pic here).

| hmmm, i see, so i guess ill have to ask anyone that wants to buy one what kind of connector they use to charge their jc40 cradle and fit it, so in your case, a usb a, and in hippo's case a mini usb b
thanks for pointing out my mistake, its an easy fix

| Not a mistake at all, just an oversight if you haven't done the mod yourself

| thanks monkeyboy for the info on where you got the spring contacts, i found 2 suppliers, so i'll ask for a quote before i start amassing nec 616 phones just for their spring contacts (they are known as pogo pins or spring probes)
anyway, i was bored and thought i would spend some time figuring out how i would make the plastic casing, and it occured to me that i would have to make the dock out of 2mm thick mdf to make the moulds of it so i can then make the plastic casts.
i also made a full size cardboard model of it just to see how it would look in real life, and ive attached some poor quality camera phone pics of it.
so it does pay to have lots of cardboard lying around

| Make sure it can charge while in the docking cradle. I wish the UX50 had a A2DP profile so music could be streamed without the need for a dock. |

| thanks,
to make it clear, the dock WILL charge your ux and your eb40/jc40 and play music when connected to a power supply
well i picked up those cardboard crafting skills from a lot of making models, origami, making boxes, playing with lego in my younger years - ah those were the days - making lego spaceships and destoying your enemies (always my younger bro )
anyway back to the dock, ive made a few decisions over the last few days, i have chosen the speakers that i will be using, they are 50mm diameter, full range speakers, that pump out 3W max - similar to those found on most docks you find
the speaker grill on the front will be, well non existent, i cant find any to buy and its easier to design into the front some 'holes' for the sound to come out from - they will be parallel horizontal 'gaps' at about 1mm thick and about 2mm seperation
i will make 1 to begin with over the easter to see that everything works and fits and is reliable, i will use this as a model to see how much resin, filler, stripboard/ wiring ect is required so i can mass produce (when i say mass produce i mean like 5 to 10 a week over the summer, i could ramp it up to more if more people want it)
initially it will be in a silver aluminium colour to match the ux and black, but if you want it in a different colour, ill see what i can do
DELAYS
the most realistic time frame dictates that i will be able to sell the first one in late june, early july - sorry about that but i have to write up my project report and revise over easter, and revision and exams up until my hols, i would love to make these asap but uni work limits my time
GOOD NEWS
over the next few weeks ill get the amplifier circuit sorted and post it up and get some tools to start making the wooden 'blank' to make the mould
well thats it for now, thanks for your support, it really does motivate me to make this thing

| Are you using this project for your thesis or an excuse to avoid political sciences? LOL
What are you studying anyway?

| nah, the docks just for fun really - i do mechanical engineering, bloody difficult subject
my project is about the hydrodynamics of trilobites, READ ON IF YOU WANT TO BE BORED
some trilobites had raised fingerprint like structures covering their 'body' - sharks have scales which have similar grooves that help to reduce the drag the shark experiences by up to 8% - my project tries to find out if the trilobites 'ridges' had the same effect.
boring.....
OK NOW THE GOOD STUFF
the good bit is that the project involved making replica trilobites from a fossil - i had to make several casts and moulds to get rid of the crap and make a streamlined trilobite to test from the original fossil - then i make one with the ridges still on it and another without, by scraping them off - then i mount them on a rig in a water channel to see the difference in drag of the 2 trilobites - currently the rigs nearly made for the tests to be done
well all that playing with making plastic replicas has given me enough experience to make the dock, and the knowledge of op amps from last year helps with the amp circuit
well thats what i do, boring for most of the last 3 years but this projects been fun, now i have to write it all up
thanks for asking - bet you wish you didn't now

| hey gadgetguru, where did you get all those degree's?
well this is just an update, today i started messing around with the electronics of the speaker dock, and i have made the first amplifier circuit which was the simplest i could find and it led to just static
after looking at the schematic and comparing it to the spec sheet of the amp ic, it seems some points were in the wrong place so tomorrow i will be messing around some more to try and get a working amp with the design suggestions in the amp ic spec sheet
i have included a pic to show you my setup, it has a 5V supply from a usb AA battery supply, sound input from the ux and output to a 2W 8ohm speaker and the electronics on a breadboard
hopefully i can get it to work, otherwise i'm going to have to get a audio amp kit from maplins or something and reverse engineer it
oh well enjoy the pics
