| UX50 Speaker Dock hi all
well i have had an idea for making a speaker dock for muy ux and thought you guys and gals maybe interested.
so far its just a few drawings and ideas, so id like to see what you people think of it.
my design is fairly simple in that it has two slim passive speakers connected to the headphone jack. i will investigate into putting an amplifier but ill see when i get the speakers. the dock will charge the ux while playing your tunes. it will have multiple inputs for charging via usb and using the sony charging power brick thats if i can make a good replica of the proprietry connector.
the dock will be useful to play your tunes, display pics or both and play movies without having to worry about the battery running low.
i have also had an idea for allowing the ux to sync via the four pins on the back of the ux. i was wondering if you could connect the usb port to the charging pins to allow for syncing much like the usb charging mod - this would also be useful to use the ux as a webcam with the palm webcam software.
the supplies will be sourced from rapid electronics which can ship parts in uk, europe and usa. and i will use the leftovers from my uni project (latex moulding rubber, polyester resin, slate grey resin filler for grey colour, plaster, card and other supplies)
i dont have time to do it yet, too much uni work, but i will start on it in the easter hols and i will post up my progress
find attached my drawings on an envelope, hopefully you can decipher it
tell me what you think and any other ideas for it
gotta get back to writing my fluids fortran95 program its due tomorrow and ive barely started

| thanks for the support
im still sourcing all the components, and i spent a loooong time trying to find spring loaded contacts for the cradle, i did eventually find them so i pretty much have everything i need. when i order the stuff i'll need to play around with the speakers to get the best sound reproduction and am considering putting in a small amp or if the speakers are good enough i may put in a volume control knob.
i cant wait to get started on it
when i finish it i may start taking orders or sending out parts for diy, but i will definitely put up the construction of it so you can follow along.
it shouldn't be too expensive either, the parts should come in at about £5-8

| thanks feromerm and gadgetguru
im hoping this thing will cost about £7-£10 to make for the electronic parts the outer plastic shell will be free cos i have all i need, although a carbon fibre look would be nice, ill have to get some fibre cloth
well i have hit a snag, today i found an old broken sony radio so i thought i would use it for preliminary tests to see what kind of volume and sound quality i could expect from the miniture speaker.
....and the good news is that the sound is fine even just in mono, BUT the volume is way too low, the monaural speaker in the ux is louder. so it seems like im gonna have to include an amp. its not too bad, it just makes this project a bit more tricky since i have to figure out how to make one as the maplin ones are just too expensive (£7) and put in a transformer to up convert the 5v supply to between 10 and 30v
ive included some pics of the disassembly from which i salvaged a 8ohm 0.5watt speaker, a volume control (pot), and i used a 3.5mm plug from some really old crappy headphones to test it out and did a quick and dirty soldering job
for those that wanna know i was playing some pink floyd dark side of the moon
ps. jam thanks for the translated media launcher, also the media launcher in the freeware section is the old one without the option for the home button assignment, please update it, thanks

| How does the eb40 recharge i just wanted to know how the eb40 recharges, is it via the ux charging cradle?
oh and if it is can someone provide a picture or link to a picture for the back of the eb40
i need to know so i can design the dock to accomodate it
another question is, are the 2 central pins on the eb40 used for anything? i ask as the cradle only needs the 2 outer pins to charge, i would be grateful for some sort of circuit diagram or just the function of the 4 pins
thanks,
UPDATE:
the speaker dock design and hardware is coming together, the amplifier is easier than i thought and will not need a voltage booster, 5v is enough. the ben heckendorn wii laptop mod showed me how to make a simple stereo amp
on the aesthetic note, i can source aluminium fillers to give the dock a nice aluminum finish to match the ux. i can also get copper, brass and bronze fillers.
on a side note, i have had the potentially dangerous idea of making replica ux body parts in different colours and slightly altering the appearance f the ux by getting rid of the lanyard loop, streamlining the sides and changing the stylus silo and creating a flip door for usb access.
this is ambitious, but all i would have to do is to make moulds of the body parts, make plaster casts and shape them to my liking and mould them and make the final cast. the problem is, i am not confident in taking my ux apart to that extent, so a bricked ux would be better.
anyone want to sell or donate a dead ux to me?

| All i now is that it clips on to the charging cradle and i think the two inner pins tell the UX how much battery is left, but thats a guess
PS keep up the gd work and boy would i like a carbon fibre UX50 that would look awesome
thanks again

| Keep up the great work Eva-01!
I wish I had an extra UX50 to donate to your cause because I'm anxious to see the final product!
Please remember to include me in your list of prospects interested in purchasing your product when you market it! I listen to JAmerican's Media Launcher everyday and your UX50 Speaker Dock will only enhance its value!
Please continue with your project. People like yourself, JAmerican and the creator of AlbumSwap (his name escapes me) as well as countless others continue to add valueable accessories and software to use with the UX50 which is why it is still the best PDA ever made!

| thanks gman and gadget guru,
Speaker dock update:
the design has been pretty much nailed down, it will be in constructed of 4 parts, the front which has the cradle and the speakers and its backing cover, and the back which will hold the front at an angle and hold the electrics, the inputs and outputs, usb, and power ports, and hold your eb40/jc40k mod and its cover.
i have done some pics, but they are very rough, so ill post some up next weekend
i have aquired the amplifier chips and a breadboard to test the gain required for good volume, i still need to get resistors, capacitors and pots to test.
it will now also include an audio input via 3.5mm jack so you can use it as an external speaker for other audio equipment, ie laptop, ipod ect.
well thats all to wet your appetite for now, but speaking reslistically, i cant get much more done on this until april as thats when i have my hols, uni work is pilling up

| You're making great progress Eva-01!
I can't wait for the finished product! Don't forget to include me as a candidate for testing!
Also... don't forget to notify me when you "market" the item... I'm definitely purchasing it!
