I have been told you can buy a Treo unlocked and use it for data only device using it like a updated TC with keyboard. I would love to have the keyboard for entering data as I am getting really sick of Graffiti and would like to have the advantages of instant weather updates and checking my mail.
I am a firefighter and carrying a palm full time wouldn't be to practical as every firefighter, ems and police officer in my area carries a Nextel and we use the 2way for emergency communications.
I am a palm addict and carry a Tx and I am sick of sitting on the side lines , I want my palm to have data abilities like getting my weather updates, radar, email, and other wireless abilities so I decided to look into what carriers allow a wireless data plan only to keep cost down of carrying two devices.
This is what I found with the 3 carriers i checked into around my area.
Verizon(700P@299.99 after rebate) will allow you to buy the phone at full price and then carry it data only for 44.95 unlimited and 40.cents a minute pay as you go voice plan.
Sprint(700p@399.99) will give you unlimited data for 15.00 a month and you must buy a voice plan which the cheapest is 29.99 at the time of research so cost jumped up a bit.
Cingular (680@119.00 after 50rebate 68.00 bucks!)will give you unlimited data for 19.99 with no voice as an option this included 200 text message limit other plans jumped up with text messages to 30 and 40.
You can add 10.00 tax to any phone so final cost of ownership came to
cingular 68.00 phone 30.00 data 680Treo
Verizon 299.99 phone 55.00 data 700P
Sprint 399.00 phone 55.00 data(required voice) 700P
So what do you guys think anybody else done this ? I am assuming i will be in the minority as most carry there device as a complete phone . If carrying two devices then they carry a bluetooth phone and a bluetooth palm , I wish I could do this buy my Nextel I880 won't allow it over iden and there aren't any drivers for my tx.
