| Reggie, you did get a great deal without risking your life...lol
at least he was honest enough to sell it for a reasonable price. personally, i never had patience for video games, but i wont mind to get it as a good dvd player... blue ray dvd's are not easy to find right now. i still have a small old tv, so, i guess we have to wait....

| Then the Wii is for you.
It's soo much fun. Friends and family that never were interested in video games were able to get into it.
I look forward to a BR player. I'm pretty sure the new MacPro I get next year will have a BR drive. If not, I still have plans to get a PS3 in the future, just not soon with all of the chaos and technical issues being ironed out.
I replaced my old 27" with a 14" Magnavox for only $77. Was worth every penny. Looks "way" better than the 19" HDTV I just bought for the content I care about.

Well almost. The first one I talked to agreed on $800 and when I was about to meet him, he calls and says that another just offered $1100! He asked if I want to match it. I wasn't about to fall for that. Quote: | Originally Posted by GadgetGuru05 blue ray dvd's are not easy to find right now. i still have a small old tv, so, i guess we have to wait.... |
With regards to blu-ray, I'm a Blockbuster (like Netflix) subscriber. I just noticed that they already have Blu-ray (and HD-DVD) titles for rent without additional charges so that's a plus. I went ahead and replaced my whole queue with blu-ray titles which a lot I have watched already, but would like to watch again in higher resolution.
My wife and I are now saving for a good 1080p LCD tv.

| I know there's always a new tech on the horizon, but Laser TV will be out next fall. If it lives up to the hype, it will be the one. http://www.engadget.com/2006/02/16/...-projection-tv/
If I had a PS3 though, I couldn't wait that long.
I hope to see Dune on BR, even though it has been announced for the sub-par crap that is HD DVD.

| Opened my PS3 today, yeh? It was like an early christmas gift, ... 'With a 500 dollar bill...
But yeah, it's a sweet system. Watched Talladega Nights, decent movie, had some funny parts... Racing fans will get more out of it, period.
PS3 itself has a sleek overview, and is very PSP like... Impressions are good thus far, and system's been on for well over 3 hours, so at least I didn't get a busted one

| What bout that myth of the once you run a game on the PS3, that CD will only run on that system and thus you can't rent games or buy used one. I reallly don't know how any system can detect that but just wondering if its true or not. Also as for that PSP interface on the PSP...thats where it should have stayed. I am unhappy with that boring interface on the 'Next-Gen' system. They should have used something more better like a watery effect and when you change to new section a wave rolls over and you see the things wash away with the new items slowly rising up top....now that would be sweeeeet |

| I played my friend's PS3 on Sunday. He has it hooked up to a 62" plasma. Anyway, it's a better system than the X360 was at launch, but that's not saying much. Like any new console it needs loads of work.
For a system that's touted as having photo realistic graphics and the capability to handle 1080p, that's mostly hype, just like the X360. Neither of these systems can trully handle 1080p at the detail they claim.
Ridge Racer running at 1080i had slight slow down in single player, but massive slow down with 2 players.
Resistance: Fall of Man looked and played like any other FPS, nothing new. At least it was up to PC standards, the X360's initial FPS COD2 looked like the PC version on medium detail. The games controls of course just sucked period, since it's a controller pad. But at least Sony offers a mouse and keyboard. So hopefully games like this support it, than a PS3 would be a great FPS box.
Fight Night. WHAT A FREAKING POS!!! This game was a PS2 port, with very little updated for the PS3. EA states film quality graphics on the box. Yeah, maybe if you're blind, or somewhat retarted! This game also would've greatly benefitted from a rumble feature.
Anway, my friend's biggest complaint was that the PS3 updates practially every day and it takes a while to do so. It did when he first turned it on for me.
And Sony needs to shoot whoever compressed the Blu Ray House of Blades trailer. It looked like crap. A normal DVD, which is a lower rez vid of course, looks awesome on my friend's screen for reference.
Blah. Just like the X360 at launch, it's all hype, but at least Sony isn't constantly trying to shove their paws into my wallet like MS and its quest to put everyone on a monthly pay to play plan.
But at least the PS3 didn't leave a sour taste in my mouth like the PS2 did with its launch titles. So I'm hoping to get a PS3 by end of next year for the BR. But for games, the Wii is simply the best console. BLAH BLAH BLAH!!!
Oh, and kudos to Sony for the PS1 to PSP downloadable games.

| ok, i have to correct some things:
* RidgeRacer does render in full 1080p. If it was rendering in 1080i, then it must be the reason that's causing the skips (maybe a ps3 bug on 1080i vs 1080p). I never encountered any skips on mine, playing in 1080p. I also wonder what brand and model the tv is since majority of the 50"+ plasmas can only go up to 1366x768.
* Resistance Fall of Man can only go up to 720p max. Controls are hard at first, give it a few hours/days and you'll get the hang of it.
* With regards to blu-ray movies, assuming the tv can only go up to 1366x768, then all blu-ray movies will only downgrade to 480p since blu-ray movies can only output to 1080 or 480 -- no 720 option.
* Regarding system updates, Sony only came out with just one update since they launched the PS3 -- v1.3.
Since I got the PS3, I bought 6 blu-ray movies already and learned that Blockbuster (the Netflix competitor) rents out blu-ray with no additional charge. I've deleted my DVD queue and replaced all of them with the currently available blu-rays.

It's an LG, which they're pretty much an OEM for most plasma screens. Current plasmas can only render 1080i max. The performance was only downright poor when playing 2 player split screen. It would drop to about 12fps, if not slower. I noticed slow down in single player, but it was slight. My friend didn't notice it at first, I had to point it out.
That would be an odd bug, considering plasmas are more popular than LCD TVs, so you would think they would provided ample QA for this type of display. Regardless, 1080i doesn't require nearly as much power to render. I've been using comps and playing games long enough, to recoginize that this was CPU slow down. I have no doubt that as developer gain experience with the PS3, this sort of thing will not be an issue with future racers. Quote:

A DVD is only 480i, but it can truly display photo realism. Graphically I was happy with it, it just looked like every other FPS game I've played. Nohting stood out and made me go wow.
The game's controls were the best they could be, considering It was using a thumb-stick to aim. That's the part I despise. I've gotten used to this less than precise method of aiming, because of games like Halo and Golden Eye 64, I just never liked it. It's an inhibiting control method for a FPS when compared to a mouse + keyboard setup. So I hope that all PS3 FPSs will build in support for a mouse and keyboard, if not I'll never consider a PS3 a good FPS box.
Or there's this option... Check out Sony's new patent request; http://www.engadget.com/2006/12/07/...and-sensor-bar/ Quote:

We downloaded the HD version, since it was a plasma. We noticed the 1080p option. This was just a poor job on whom ever compresed the movie. I have only respect for BR's potentional and will buy a PS3 to support it, and I know from experience that h.264 is superior to MPEG2. I use it for all of my comp videos, since it provides the best quality at the smallest possible size. This is why I mentioned Sony should shoot whoever prepped this trailer.
When I say it looked like crap, it was overly compresed to the point that action scenes displayed mass blockage. Download it and see for yourself.
I download 1080p h.264 trailers from Quicktime.com, and they look great. I watch them full screen, which is 1600p. They also hold up when scaled down with the window's lower right corner. Quote:

| Here's more info about Sony's acknowledgment that they like the Wiimote; US Patent. A game controller having LEDs, sound capture and generation, or an accelerometer is also described. *copycats*
