| NZ90 cannot read MS duo MagicGate I just recently saved up enough to get a 2nd hand NZ90 (my dream machine) from ebay and I've been having some problems with the MS card after a hard reset.
Although I've updated my Clie with the newest updates from Sony, My MS Duo magicgate 128mb is still funky. The problem is, after reading/or writing to the stick several times, the NZ90 stop reconizing the card. E.g. first shot with the camera saves correctly but the second shot gives an error and the shot gets erased.
When I start up card info, no device ID can be displayed.
I'm using a 128MB Sony MS Duo MagicGate (Navy Blue) with an adapter (MSAC-M2)
Can someone give a bit of guidence on the matter. I know the item is old but I still like it an dhope that someone can shed some light on the matter. |

| Welcome to 1src!
Try reformating the card with Clie Files (when it can still see it)

| Wow, that was fast on the response.
I took your advice and tried that several times... when the card could still be detected. Still gave me the same problem.
I tried some other metods I found floating on other such forums. Here's the most recent and did get me a bit of results. I did a complete hard reset, rechecked the files and their version to confirm it being the default ones.
I downloaded the updates from my PDA's country of origin which was Singapore. I updated the Clie one update at a time and did a soft reset afterwards. I popped the MS card in and initially it was detected without errors. I started card info, the ID of the card was still not visible. I did a format of the card and soft reset the unit.
I started the camera (which was the most problematic before) and took several pictures. It all saved perfectly into the MS. Problem started when I started browsing the MS with the viewer program. The program crashed with an error message "MemoryMgr.c,Line:3649,Nil Ptr" and I had to reset my PDA. I tried it with another program "ComicGuru" which ran fine on my rich friend's NX80 using a 256MB MS Pro. I got the same message after browsing through a few pages. When I check the MS using the small MS icon at the bottom of the screen, the name of the card is just a [] symbol.....
I have to eject the card several times after that to get it to be detected again.
I am totally stumped.... I could use some more advices if there's anymore out there. thanks. |

| Hmm, have you tried formating it in your PC?

| !! Errrmmm.... that's kinda extreme... gulp.... but I could try.... Kinda need to dig those drivers out first.... I could use a new laptop to do a clean install of the software suite and stuff though. I kinda moonlight at this PC hardware shop.
I'll post the results in a while. But then, I don't mean to sound ungrateful of your advice, but... it's the PDA that's giving me the errors not my PC though... but regardless, you're the veteran so I'll try to install the stuff on the new laptop. Gimme a sec. |

| you need either another memory srick or another palm to test. if other palm works w/ your stick it your palm, if another stick works for you, then it's th stick. no way to test otherwise

| hi dmitrygr. thanks for the reply.
Picking....
1. card bad
I tested the card with a chinese based software for testing flash memories. It breeze through the test without any errors. I conducted a low level format on the MS card, then reinserted it into the Clie and it detected fine. I formated the card with the Clie and did the same test as before and I got the same error message. I tried to google the eror message but nothing useful came up.
2. Device bad
I had a certified Sony tech checked the thing out for US80 and got a clean bill of health before I paid the previous owner for it. I tested it with my friend's MS Pro an dno errors popped up.
3. combination thereof......
Errrmmm....... I think choices 1 and 2 sums up my answer for this choice.
Regardless, thanks for bringing those issues to light, you're great for trying and I really appreciate the help.
Anyone else got the same problem and got a solution? Thanks. |

| Have you tried formating it after the Clie has gone through a hard reset with no restore?

| Ah so.... point taken. So is there any tools out there that can properly stress test the sticks? I know for RAM modules you can use proggies like memdoctor to stress test the modules with all sorts of test algorithms including bit checkings.
I know such proggies might very will cook your MS sticks but heck, I'd prefer a fried stick to a tempremental one. The checker I used also included a parity bit checker(whatever it is) that tests the stability and other whatnots that in essence contributes directly the usability of the stick.
I also conducted a laymen's test. I plug the sucker into my friend's NX80 and the bastard was smooth as silk. On another's NX70, the stick froze up again. As the NX70 was in chinese, I couldn't make head or tales on what the error message said. But them's the apples with the stick.
Oh, the stick also worked in my Cybershot without glitches. Capped movies and photos till the card maxed out and still it was A-Ok....
If I use a MS Pro on my Clie, it works...... Grrr.....
I dream is slowly turning into a nightmare. All you Clie Gurus out there, please do shine a light on my plight.... I'll try anything.... even flashing my Clie if needed! |

| The NX70 and NX80 run the same OS, so I think it's your NX70...

| I'm stumped on the memory dilemma here. I read on the Sony website that the NZ90 should be able to support a memory stick pro 1GB without any form of hassle.
So the other day (right after payday mind you) I went and got a MSX-1GS... a sony memory stick pro 1GB and popped it into my card reader. It formatte fine and so I dumped everything from my MS 128MB into it. But when I popped it into my NZ90, the card appears to be write protected. After double checking the hardware tab and making sure thrice that the tab is not set to lock, I still get a locked stick symbol....
Arrrghhhhh...... WHY!!?? |
