There looks like there is something weird going on with the RSS feed for this week's show. You you can manually download the 1SRC Podcast show 94 here.

I've alerted Reggie to the problem and with any luck this issue will be resolved by tomorrow. I'm sorry for any trouble the broken RSS feed my have caused you.

Are you sure that the rss issues are related to the feed itself, or could it be something with the latest release of iTunes?

My other podcasts on iTunes are also not updating...maybe that's the issue?

I took a look at the RSS feed file and I didn't see show 94 in there, but I'm not sure how Reggie is generating that file. iTunes 7 could be the problem, but I had someone else check who isn't using iTunes and they told me that it isn't showing up in their podcast catcher either.

RSS issues aside, I thought that was one of the better 1src podcasts as of late...I really thought your insights/thoughts about the future of Palm OS were interesting, and I also appreciate that you commented on nearly all of the latest rumors of the week.

Nice work, keep it up!

Nope, something else is wrong since Juice still isn't grabbing it.

Great podcast Alan.I found it interesting that the Palm person PJ spoke with said they are working with PalmSource on a Linux based OS, but they won't commit to ALP. Isn't ALP the Linux based OS?? You're definitely on point with Palm OS II. Palm is working on their own OS, they basically announced it with that comment. Palm is giving enough information to let us know that there will be a next generation OS on their devices, we all know we definitely need it. I'm surprised that they actually even admit that there is an OS they are working on, it's good news for us that they are giving us that much information.

I think it's also wise of them to open the PDN to WIndows Mobile, after using my 700wx I see how much Palm has added their special sauce to make this NJAWMD (not just another Windows Mobile device) it's first and foremost a Treo. Using the 700wx is a joy to use, can't believe I am saying that about a Windows Mobile device, but again it's still a Palm. I commend Palm for giving their developers the tools to create both Palm OS and Windows Mobile apps. Palm knows how important developers are, and I'm glad they are supporting both.

When Palm comes out with their next OS for a Treo, I doubt they will put it in a 700 series name, it deserves the spotlight and to be on a new named, series device. They will have want to capitolize on "we have an OS that can multitask" and it will be the hugest thing ever to happen with the Palm OS. They are going to want to go big time with it, and I'd guess it will be the Treo 800, or Treo non-number name. Palm will probably start shying away from the number naming convention. Motorola has done away with it, and Nokia just announced they would be going with names rather than numbers. Numbers age products.

I'm excited at what Palm has in store for us, and I will definitely get the first new OS device they announce. I've been a long supporter of Garnet, it's a great OS, but it will have to be be delegated to the low end. I'm not one of those people jumping on the Windows Mobile bandwagon and putting Palm OS down, but after using a Treo running Windows Mobile it's gratifying to be able to do more. The reason is Palm has put their "world-class, ease of use on Windows Mobile", it's not a clone WM device, it's still a Palm, it's still a Treo, it's just enhanced by Palm's ability to do what no other company has done with Windows Mobile. Others have tried, but it took Palm to tweak Windows Moible in such a way that a long time Palm OS user (fan boy) can appreciate.

Alan I've got to give you props, you called it Palm OS II before anyone and I'm glad it's starting to come to fruition. One of the best podcasts, great job!!

I don't think LifeDrive, T5 and TX users will necessarily be the demographic for the 680, perhaps legacy models (III, V, m-series), Zires, Z22, and the huge population we rarely see in forums (because they keep it simple and don't add third-party apps) is that target. It also occurred to me that the 680 could be a lead-free reworking of the 650 so that it can easily be sold GSM unlocked worldwide, at a reasonable price, without all the environmental importation issues.

As for "working with PalmSource," I'm not sure if this is old information, a leak, or intentionally placed in order to keep the competition on their toes. Could be any or a combination. Magic 8-ball says "yes-definitely," but I'm not going to reveal my question.

3 more weeks and I am moving on.

I just watched a movie of an HTC device, thanks to PalmAddicts. http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk/sshow/ss14.html

I am waiting a few more weeks to see if any rumours arise for a new LifeDrive or TX, if there are none, I am buying the HTC TyTN. I am tired of waiting on Palm.

TyTN has retractable keyb, jogwheel, menu/ESC buttons, camera 2mp, camcorder, mic, 320x240 WM, microSD, UMTS/EDGE/HSDPA, GSM/GPRS Unlocked, 128 + 64 MB. A true multimedia device. Cons: No oled, no vga, no feet on back to stand device when playing movies.

Those are the features I have been expecting Palm to put into a handheld. Not put some in, then take some out, always leaving the device incomplete. The Treo 700p is closest to the TyTn, but since Palm seems to be planning a switch to WM and abandoning Palm OS, I may as well just go out now and buy a larger 320x240 screen, more complete, higher end device than the Treo. Remember what I once said about Palm abandoning its niche market and the risks of competing with the big boys in the WM market? Looks like I may be an example of a consumer turning to a WM competitor, a decision based solely on features and price, and the absence of all loyalty to any given brand.

I need some serious news from Palm on the plans for Palm OS based on an in house developed Linux kernal, and their real plans for full screen handhelds/phones with a very strong multimedia features. OLED would be a retention factor.

Disappointed

Nice podcast Alan however I'm with Vampire. I recently purchased a Nokia 770 internet table. The screen in a word is awesome, the opera browser is a dream to use compared to anything I've seen on any palm.

I'm hoping palm will come out with the next mobile manager otherwise they have lost me forever. I've already gone to all of the palm developers of the software I like expressing my disappointment with palm and asked them to consider creating their apps for the nokia 770.

Some quick notes about the 770 for those interested.

Wifi/bluetooth
Email/Video/Webrowsing/audio player is a good exprience.
Goes into sleep mode when the cover is placed over it. (basically this lets me leave it on continuously -- startup time = remove sliding cover, battery life when left on about 3 days of normal use including listening to about 2hrs of podcasts every day.)
App support is short but since it is linux based new ported apps come over monthly.

Some things that are really cool. XTerminal, scp (ssh copy client), dbclient (ssh terminal) These let me ssh into my home machine retrieve my podcatchers downloaded podcasts from anywhere... With the palm I was using smbmate but didn't want to open up my network via windows shares so I could only use it from home, with the nokia and ssh I can download them directly to the nokia 770 from anywhere. Quite cool.

I find my lifedrive now resides in my car, the cell phone and nokia 770 go with. I still haven't imported my contacts and calendar over but that is next on the list, after that the lifedrive might not make it into the car on a normal basis.

Please someone at Palm wakeup and realize they had the market with the lifedrive and now they are ignoring it.

I know. They [Treo 700wx] do look really cool. I've been saying it for a while now, but I really do want to get my hands on a WM Treo to play around with it. Getting my hands on a 750v would be awesome!

Let's just wait and see what will happen here. This is almost like a presidential election, too close to call. Basically, it is like a coin toss. It could be ALP. It could be Palm OS II. If I'm right, I get to gloat.

If the Treo 680 is the new low cost device, it will be the device the current Palm handheld owners will move up to when they decide that their disconnected device is no longer meeting their needs. I agree, out of the gate, TX, LifeDrive, Z22, et al, are probably not the target audiance right now. My point was that Palm will likely keep a few of the handhelds around because not everyone wants to have a Treo and secondly, devices like the Z22 and E2 are great devices to "get your feet wet" with. And since a Z22 or E2 customer is already familiar with Palm OS, they might go with a Palm OS Treo because it works like the device they are already used to.

You know, for all the mobile tech I own, I still don't have a Magic 8-ball yet. I'll have to ask Jen to get me one for Christmas.
