Hi.

Just got my LD two days ago, I noticed that after a couple of minutes since it went off, I hear a "zrrck" (trying to reprod. the sound!) as if the HD went of or something...

Is this normal or there might be something wrong with my baby? Everything seems to be working fine...

That sounds about right. If the sound levels around me are quiet enough, I hear the head parking after turning my LifeDrive off.

But do you hear it EXACTLY in the moment when you turn it off, or after some time from that? :?

Both. Sometimes the LD will shutdown and park the HD immediately, and sometimes it'll have a few cleanup tasks before it parks.

Hey!

I also hear it after reading some files... example:

browsing pictures... drive is idle... I go to next picture, then I hear a spin as the next picture gets read, then the park (like a "drrk") and the spin and disk activity stops... it keeps going and going for every picture I browse, starting the cycle all over...

Now I know that this is pretty normal, since that how an HD works but... is it ok for the LD? Is this how it works for you? I just bought it and I'm going crazy! :O

I hear the same behavior as you observed, it's the HD spinning up and spinning down as necessary. Saves on power in the long run. If you set your desktop or laptop HD to extremem power management settings, it too will spin down and click like that too.

Have you considered exchanging your LD for a TX, coupled with a large SD card? THat will give you a HD-free PDA, which would be more rugged, quieter, and have longer battery life.

I just bought it the other day and I seriously consider which to buy... of course, I've taken the LD.

FWIW, my first LD died due to a HD failure after about 4 months of use. I'm suspecting that the head latch wouldn't unlatch. I did drop it once, a week or so before it failed, probably damaging the latch. I also noticed a gradual concave indention on the back of the LD that could have placed pressure on the top of the drive unit which the technical documentation specifically stated should be avoided at all costs.

My replacement LD has been rock solid. It's a crashing heap like all NVFS devices are proving to be however since I want a PDA that actually works great between crashes, I'm stuck with PalmOS. WM5 just doesn't cut it as I've been there and done that. That said, I believe that the HD in the LD is more rugged that one would think.

I would quit fretting over the HD, or trade it in for a TX.

Before it crashed; (the days / weeks before), did you noticed some signs of the problem? I don't know what could be but, strange noise, slowness, something?

You're going to hear the hard drive starting and stopping, man. It's a hard drive device with very little RAM. It's not an iPod. It's not even a T3. Get over it! It'll be fine. Enjoy the copious storage.
