| JCB-40 1800mAH External Battery Mod As requested by JAmerican, here are some pics of my JCB-40 battery mod (which also show just how poor the UX camera is for close-ups!).
The basic layout/design of the mod is the same as Hippo's but because I am using two of the 900mAH Running Power batteries (picture 5), I have not had to remove the circuit board on which the original contacts were mounted. There was some filing/sanding of the units interior required, but due to the dimensions of the batteries used, I believe that this was less than Hippo's.
The four spring pins used to make contact with the UX came from my NEC e616v mobile phone's battery charger (pictures 2 and 8). They are held in place by some thin pieces of plastic and then some cardboard jammed under the aforementioned PCB (picture 7). One of these days I will get around to glueing them in place permanently, but because I have got in the habit of leaving the JCB-40 attached all the time, it hasn't really become an issue.
I also managed to lose one of the springs that holds the retention clips in place, but found that the spring from a floppy disc was customisable to work correctly! (picture 7).
The final tweak of my design was to use one of the redundant screws from the PCB holding the original power-in port on the upper edge (see picture 6 for where it should be!) to act as an additional "hook" which would hold the rear of the UX to the modified cradle. The screw is inserted through the upper edge of the plastic charger base (picture 4) and rests just on the surface of one of the batteries inside. If you are going to repeat this, be VERY careful that you don't inadvertently pierce the Li-Ion battery!
The JCB-40 has a full-size USB port fitted at present (picture 3), but I do plan to replace this with a mini-USB female port so that I only have to carry one USB lead in laptop bag. Because I am doing all the charging via the UX USB port, I don't think the JCB-40 betteries are being charged fully each time either.
This is a work in progress, but it is taking time - something I don't have a lot of!

| Pictures 6, 7 and 8 Pictures 6, 7 and 8... This message is too short and so I thought I would offer another chance to visit www.transfiguration-tshirts.co.uk which offers affordable, Jesus-inspired clothing

| NICE!!! I was thinking of doing this but without even modifying the pin layout in the JC40. Just connect the battery to pin 1 and in the UX cut pin 1 and connect the int battery to that. Then I would connect the USB in the UX to the orange lead's pin 1 connection (since its seperate from the connector once cut). But this is somewhat dangerous due to if the current from the USB were ever to get close to the battery current, might cause overcharging.

| I have no real electronics experience, so I thought it best to follow the lead of Hippo, but add little twists to the formula which suited my needs as best as possible. This is definitely a better solution than a battery extender, although I do still have one
