Well, you are able to run graphics on a PCI board... I guess all things are relative. One reason I got a dual PCI-ex board was that there were rumors of PCI/PCIX and PCIex boards as coprocessors.

However if you look at the API for the physics processor, you realize why it works. It uses asynchronous logic.

Normally when you code physics it would be like this:

do_something()
Calc_something()
process_results()
draw_something()


with the PPU external processor it turns into:
do_something()
submit_calculation()
do_somethingelse()
request results()
draw_something

or you switch to a frame early scenerio:
request_results(lastframe)
draw_somethign(lastframe)
do_something(thisframe)
submit_calculation(thisframe)
do_somethingelse(thisframe)
get_new_frame(); // lastframe=thisframe; thisframe=getnewframe();

so your waiting for results after submitting them. this is the same as a multithreaded dual core model, except that it is waiting on an external unit.
