2008 Macworld Keynote

I can't believe the new Macbook Air. I read about a thin notebook, but not soooo thin it would fit in those legal envelopes! My goodness that thing is thin! I can't wait for the keynote to be available to see the whole thing instead of pics and texts of it ;_;

Too expensive for my taste... If it were around one grand it would interest me... but tell me how many percentage of prospective mac users will buy this instead of a Macbook which is more powerfull and $800 cheaper?

They should have made it a UMPC. 10" screen.

13" is reserved for the MacBook. 15/17" reserved for MacBook Pro. So 10" reserved for MacBook Air. Makes sense to me. Oh well. Someone was not thinking at Apple. Engadget has a poll about ordering the Air and ~65% said hell no. Engadget's poll is probably not a great estimate but it does show there is a leaning moreso toward its nice to look at not to buy.

I agree, it is very expensive and I know I won't get it, I'm just astonished in the size ^_^.

I'd get it over the MacBook, sure. Tougher choice between MacBook Air and MacBook Pro - the specs of the MBP balance out (figuratively speaking) the weight differential. I need a little more convincing about the lack of optical drive - sure it can read a DVD from another wireless computer, but at what speed? If the 2nd computer isn't running "n" then transfer speeds would be beastly.

I also like the multi-touch track pad even though I'm sure it's only a matter of time before the MB & MBP follow suit.

All in all a slick, lean, travelling machine.

MacBook Air or Foleo

Is it just me or did the MacBook Air feel like a Foleo but all 'growed' up? I mean, especially with the SSD option it is best as a companion peice of gear (albeit expensive). I would buy it and just keep it synced to my Mac Pro if I had one. Anyway, just a thought.

Being surprisingly thin yet so heavy, I feel that this thing is designed with marketing instead of practical use in mind. They want you to say "Wow, it's cool" instead of "I enjoy using it".

Totally the opposite of how Palm designed their products. I prefer something with a balance of looks and usability, not one of the extremes.

Also, it's too expensive for what it offers. In this respect, it's similar with the Foleo.

The entry level MacBook is much better in those regards then the MacBook Air. Maybe they'll use this thin gimmick to lure people into Apple stores, and then tell them the MacBook is a great buy...

"So heavy"? Huh? It's almost half the weight of the MacBook & MacBook Pro lines. That's what attracts me to it. While I like cool (people still think my T5 is cool) that is never my reason for purchase - it must be practical. Of course, practical and cool is even better

Now I don't know if I will ever get one of these, but it's weight, size and versatility make it a very attractive package. Unlike the Foleo, this thing is usable - I can actually do things with it. And unlike a UMPC device, it has full size screen and keyboard - that makes it functional. I don't want to be pecking at tiny keys and squinting at a little screen, and learning new software while I'm at it. I want my technology to get out of the way and let me do my job. It's how Palm used to design their products.

Having said that, I don't know if this would meet my needs. I'm concerned by the lack of an optical drive and the lack of ports, especially Firewire. But then again, considering how often I actually use them when away from home, their absence is mitigated somewhat. When I'm ready to purchase my next machine, this will definitely be under consideration.

And, although I use Macs, I'm not a fan-boy: no iPod, no iPhone, no Apple TV. I haven't even watched the Keynote...

what about the iPhone and iPod touc updates? I am tempted to get the update for the new maps, the webclips, the chapter selection and lyric support. I wished they had given us copy/paste support and give iPod touch users the ability to play music for an alarm, obviously only useful if you have a speaker dock.
