| Palm Sucks! Since ive bought my zire 71, palm has been to me the best PDA manufacturer. Palm OS is MUCH better than Windows CE and so the software designed for it. And then the hotsync button at my base stopped working. A few days after that i couldnt hotsync anymore using USB. The connection cable has broken because of the many times i had slid the palm up and down to take pictures. So i bought an USB IRDA device to get my palm sync'ed and i had found out that palm desktop doesnt like it and just doesnt works with it. for some bizarre reason i can start the hotsync one time in 100000000 tries. Now the video is dying too! Sometimes the whole screen gets white and i have to open the palm case to press the screen's flat cable and get the screen working again. It would be the best PDA if it wasnt so fragile. I havent seen a Zire 71 that last more than a year and a half (because the warranty is 1 year it usually start dying around 1 year and 2 months). |

Actually, you are so lucky your Palm stopped AFTER the warrenty so you didn't have to deal with the Palm customer support.
Man, if you hate Palm, you would have been in a rampage if you had to deal with their support the way I had. Months of email and phone calls with unresponsiveness that lead to nowhere but frustration until the warrenty expired. I swore I would never buy another Palm product. I too had a Zire 71 that lasted whopping 8 months. But I gotta tell ya, during those 8 months when it was working, I was absolutely thrilled with it. I don't think I've ever missed a tech toy as much as I miss my Zire. |

| There's an option to repair the cable, either yourself by buying the cable and doing it or, soldering it.
I agree that it could have been better that the cable wouldn't bend and break under the stress of opening and closing the slider.
I still have my Zire 71 but I have kept the slider open permanently. But, there have been many Zire 71 users who repaired their cable by soldering it and preventing the breakage by not allowing it to get too bent so that it will break.
Every electronic device isn't perfect. |

| I've got my Zire 71 repaired by some Good and Smart People for free - now it doesnt slide open but here it is. Maybe you could do the same - solder the cable and never open Zire again.
Since then I came back to loving Palm and their devices. |

| How do the pictures turn out when you take pics with the hole in the case? I'm interested in seeing how they are. Can you post pics taken with the modded Zire 71? Cool that you've got a switch on the side.
I don't think many people are that good at repairing or soldering but you're lucky you've got someone who can do it for free. |

| Hi,
I knowe that this may now sound sarcastical:
a)Try to talk PalmOne into doing a gracwe repair(**** sometims happens, you know . Say that it is a series error,...
b)Try to repair it yourself
c)Get yourself an E2. They are on sale for 120€ at a few stores in austria already(got one for me, visit TamsPalm soon for review . |

| But the E2 doesn't have a camera. I think most Zire 71 owners bought it for the camera, well, at least I did. The Zire 72, although has a better camera, uses the mini-USB and all my universal connector accessories won't work. Had it been UC, I would have upgraded a long time ago.
I think the Treo 650 is what I'll eventually upgrade to.
@ahsirg. The pics look good. I was expecting that the hole may somehow show some shadows around the edges. I guess the hole was big enough. Any problems getting dust inside?
