I was trying to convert a quicktime file of a movie trailer to a Kinoma file so I can see it on my Clie, but it wont convert because it says that the quicktime file is copy protected. I'm using a Mac, so is that a software or a way that I can turn off this copy protected option?

I am not sure what the software would be on your Mac but us PC users have a utility (From Apple) called Dumpster and it enables you to hex edit the Quicktime file (remove nsav mode to allow saving of the file, remove protection etc.)

Check the Apple site...there obviously one for the Mac if there is one for the PC

Ok, I've downloaded Dumpster for Mac, but when I launch it all I see is a list on numbers and stuff, don't even know where to start. All I want to do is convert the movie trailer for Bad Boyz 2 into a kinoma file so I can show some friends at work, and like I said before, Kinoma producers tells me that the file is copy protected. Any other info in helpful. Thanks again...

open dumpster then drag the mov. file into the open dumpster window it will then open that file so you can edit it slowly go though the file line by line (clicking on each line as you go to open it) until you fine nsav it will have a value after it like 00000001 change this value to 0 and that should remove the protection

Ok, I'm experienced with using dumpster, if you can't find the nsav folder (because it isn't really copy protected) then try converting the audio and video seperately, I personally didn't think it could possibly work... but to my amazement it did, btw I'm using radtools.

I am having trouble with Dumpster. I can open quicktime (.mov) files with it, and change values in fields. But, when I save and re-open a file, none of the changes were written to disk. Is there something extra that needs to be done to save changes?

I'm trying to disable 'nsav' so I may convert protected video files. If Dumpster does not work, I will need another way of disabling (or otherwise bypassing) the protection on these files.

Two words:
Metadata Hootenanny.

Alternatively, you could use MPEG StreamClip, VLC, FFMpegX or something else to crossconvert from Quicktime. I don't think these apps honor the copy protection flag.
