Anyone spend way too much time on Digg yesterday?

Hey, just wanted to see what everyone thinks about the Digg fiasco yesterday. Digg finally bowed to the pressure and stopped blocking posts about the HD-DVD decryption key, and Kevin Rose posted his own article with the key in the title. That thread will be at 30,000 Diggs within the hour.

Some background: A little while back (weeks or months, im not sure) someone on the Doom9 forums discovered a Device Decryption key for HD-DVD discs. This is essentially the Uber Key, supposedly it can be used to decrypt all discs made to date. It was posted on some blogs, which got DMCA takedown notices, and then it was posted onto Digg. The story was dugg up, then deleted, and users banned from Digg. It was massively reposted 100s of times, and thousands of comments include the key in them. At one point Digg itself shutdown from what is known as the Digg effect (though I am not sure they have ever had their own site killed this way). Anyways, take a look at it on Digg.com

My first thought was "Wow, I wonder how much they're earning with the site hits?" You see, whatever direction the "digg-ng" goes, it's still to Digg's advantage -- revenue-wise.

I haven't visited Digg for quite some time now. I opted instead to streamline my RSS feeds and read the news that I like. It's just crazy to let others decide what I should "dig."

And take a look at what happened. It's a mob. It's a mob being dictated by what the majority thinks. What an *individual* thinks at this point is of no value. Digg is out of control. I'm not going to be surprised if it kills itself. Again.
