| speakers wont work hi, i have recently installed windows xp mce2005 on my pc and my speakers dont work. when i had xp pro they didnt work but before that they worked fine. its weird because when i run linux they work fine but in xp they dont. i have tried installing the drivers (S3 Sonicvibes) and when that didnt work i turned of my pc and took out that card, made sure it was connected fine, it was, took it out and tried the sound card built in my pc (i built my own pc.) i turned it on and, it didnt work! i have no idea what kind of sound card my pc has because it doesnt say. again it works in linux. weird, huh?

Not sure what is going on but here is what I tell anyone that has a problem with WMP sound...
1. in media player, there is a volume control and a mute button.
2. In volume control, there is another mute button and output and wave
out sliders.
3. Sound hardware can be enabled/disabled in hardware manager
4. Speakers can become unplugged or plugged in to the wrong port.
5. Speakers have a volume control and a power switch.
6. Speaker power adapters may fail, get unplugged or power strips may
fail or get unplugged.
After checking all of these you might try simply re-booting. this
solves lots of problems. Windows can easily get confused.

I think your problem may be in BIOS. Take out the sound card, then go into BIOS and enable the on-board sound. Then try re-booting.
Also, try downloading and installing the latest drivers for either card.
