Crashed XP again...

Good thing I have the Linux boot now....

I am about to reinstall XP from scratch, made two backups of the whole disk, one offline, one online. practiced restoring my email settings with thunderbird (and have my checklist for restoring mail).

Making my final backups of Documents and Settings, all my images, technical white papers, notes, and just all around odd junk.

Wish me luck! it's going to be a looooong night!

However, I highly recommend people have a linux boot, or at least any boot, even a boot cd. Something they can make backups on a complete hose-down crash. Mepis and other CD boot images are nice in that you can boot the CD without ever installing linux, copy your disks to safety before you reformat. And for those paranoid like me, make double and triple backups of important things.

Then comes the long line of re-install... System is corrupted so I am loath to attempt a full backup, with windows I prefer a reinstall to dump all the un-necessary stuff. And I have had odd things for a while, so time to just do it....

*grabs violin and starts playing as the ship sinks*

Bummer dude! I feel your pain.

Hey, gotta a question. I recently downloaded Mepis after reading about it in one of your other threads. I burned it as an image to cd, however, when I boot from the cd all I get is a command line. It looks like it goes through the whole process but I don't get a "desktop". I'm completely lost when it come to Linux. Any ideas?

(I figured you could answer this in between installs )

Doh....... *slaps forehead*

Just got to thinking. If you're reinstalling Windows, you're probably not reading this.

Never mind.

it was actually corrupted a number of weeks ago when my UPS was failing at random times. It was a gift from my brother, so it wasn't missed. I got a new UPS with the last of my money about two weeks ago. But the damage had been done. I've not been able to install the latest .Net updates for over a month, and I've been having occassional lockups. so I have been planning for this eventuality. I am an ex-Boyscout, so I was prepared.

during bootup, do you get a question asking if you want modern or older hardware support? I have no problems with it. The CD boots, asks for modern or older, I have modern, so select it, and then it slowly comes up. It isn't fast off of CD but remarkably good. I then used itself to install itself to disk.

With Linux all hardware support is not there, they are still catching up. Mine worked flawlessly.

OEM System Builders actually have what's called a Windows PE enviroment. What it basically is is a miniature version of Windows XP that boots into a console and you can launch Windows apps from there or do basic functions from the console. Here, let me get a picture.

Of course, mere mortals have no way of obtaining these thanks to draconian Microsoft policies. But I also have an emergency second partition of BeOS, just in case. BeOS can read just about ANYTHING.

It's not a full version of windows. There isn't any real GUI components on the CD. To try to use it as a regular version of windows is impossible.
