I think that either OS will satisfy my needs. The software which I use and want to purchase is available for Palm and PPC (with the exception of the free e-Sword which is only PPC). I began with Palm because I liked the TH55. However, the more software I buy will make me more hesitant to switch OS's. Am I wrong in understanding that when I replace my TH55 and if I find a PPC more to my liking than what Palm then offers, I will have to purchase the PPC version software which I already have in the Palm OS?

Yes, unless the software company treats the Palm and the PPC as having the same license.
Actually in most cases, it will probably depend on the validation method. If they use device ids, and the same keygen, then yes the programs can work, as long as both devices have the same name. If you are only using the program on one device, and they are just ports of the same thing, its not bad. If they dont work this way, its unlikely you will be able to get both versions, unless their website has a system that lets you download both registered versions of a program.
