| What are you doing with old Palms? Recently rediscovered all my old Palm devices that were stored inside my tech vault. To my surprise, a lot of them still work -most of them without functional batteries- but at least a couple are fully operational.
So I was wondering if any of you dear 1src members, are still using them in a repurposed manner or what uses have you found for them now that a great majority of us have transitioned to other OS platforms?
I read several blogs and the like, where people is suggesting to use Palms as portable gaming devices, as media players, or as first-time computers for the young kids. What else do you suggest?
I really want to give them a second life. These devices were just plain wonderful back when I was younger. I think, they deserve more than just stockpiling dust somewhere!

| There was a reply here somewhere, but for some reason, I just can't seem to find it!

| I still have my Sony TH55 and my Palm Treo 680. The Sony has a permanent place beside my bed and serves as a clock radio. The Treo is connected to my living room hifi and serves as a MP3 player.
Nostalgia :-)
I'm now a devoted Android user :-))

| I still use my TH55 actively as nothing comes close to replacing it's function - I basically use it as an infinity notepad and database for my work, but not one smartphone has proven as capable for quickly writing down notes and stuff which is all I really use it for!
(I hate onscreen keyboards and capacitive touchscreens suck donkey balls for accurate input. I tried Graffiti on Android but it's basically unusable unless I use a stylus)
My old T625 and T675 sadly broke (I miss them;Their excellent ergonomics made them great eReaders) but I recently got my old Zodiac 2 working again and it has been drafted into being a universal remote control |

| My TX is still working great, a must to help my dwindling memory... but as sad as it makes me feel, I'm changing to a Galaxy Note as my primary device. My little daughter is using a Vx as per trial to see how long it'll last in her hands and the she is inheriting my TX. |

Been an iPhone user since the first one came out, but I must agree that for all the great things that the device is capable of, nothing comes close to the overall functionality of the PalmOS. I miss the graffiti input, the great TCPMP player that allowed me to view pretty much all video formats out there without having to convert them, the great and visually addicting nature of Agendus -which on iPhone fails miserably- and all of the other things and hacks that I used over the years. It's really sad to see these devices fade into oblivion when they are still capable of so much.
BTW I recently saw an ad for a Zodiac 2 used device somewhere. Do you think it'll make for a great addition to my collection?

Am probably giving one of my palms to my 3 y.o. daughter as well. Problem is, she's been an iPad -and now iPhone- user since she was 2. Wonder what she'll make of the Palm. Let me know how it goes with your daughter, please!

| I developed a dependency on my T5 after my brain was reformatted and revamped back in 2005 (after a bit of TBI), and then moved on to a Tx a few years later. I very much depend on the 'ol Tx and its reliable (and backup-able) memory - my work Blackberry is useless except as a phone. I am obviously in the minority, judging by the Tx prices on Ebay. Given my 'addiction', I have built up my Tx 'stable' up to 5 units. The last one from Ebay only cost $40 incl shipping - besides being a 2006 vintage (= poorer quality LCD) it is in great shape! I am fooling around with a Kindle Fire these - perhaps I will figure out how to get the same level of utility out of Android? In the meantime, still heading down the Tx pathway...... |

Guess it would be wise for me to buy a TX -got an E2 with NVRAM but the small screen puts me off. I recently loaded a bunch of apps to my NX but after launching a game that was meant for a Palm and not a Clie, the whole beast turned crazy prompting me to erase all its contents!!
BTW How do you hot sync?

| I hotsync in the old-fashioned manner - with a USB connection into Palm Desktop 6.2 on Vista(32) and Win7(32) machines. While NVBackup plays a more important backup role than the Palm Desktop syncs, the Desktop does allow me to export my PDA data into DejaOffice and Pimlical on the Kindle Fire. However, I haven't found an Android combo that can compete with RescoExplorer + Datebk6, TealPhone, Tasks, and ChronMemo.
If you are willing & able to tackle digitizer and/or battery replacement, you can get a Tx on Ebay for very cheap - I just picked up another Tx for $16 (incl shipping). Ebay is a great source for Tx spare parts. Remind me - when did Sony stop making the Clie? How old is your device? Is Ebay also a good source for Clie spare parts? |

| Sigh!
Just logged in here, after more than 5 years!! (Shame on me...).
My Tungsten T3 is unfortunately gone some years ago with a dead (already replaced once) battery, very drifting touch screen and intermittent resets...
It is very sad having seen the Palm world killed by "smart" phones which are now turning again towards the size and usability of "old" Palms!!
Anyway in my family there is a still very functional Treo 680 and a slightly less functional Treo 650, just replaced by an iPhone4.
I personally have very very recently become addicted to Android by means of a Samsung galaxy Tab 7".
And now seeking for an excuse to replace my Nokia 5800 - Symbian OS is dying, too :-(
with some Android phone
Long live the Palm community spirit!!
Cheers,
Fez |

Sadly, am a Mac user so using Palm desktop is pretty much out of the question. But please illustrate me, what is this NVBackup app you're talking about?
Not planning to use much of the PIM software on the Palm, but would like my data to be safe and not having to restore from zero each time a crash happens. Quote: | Originally Posted by wminner

Actually I used to fix my Zire71 from salvaged units until I ran out of them. So am pretty much used to replacing digitizers, swapping motherboards, lcd screens, etc. I'm looking to buy into second-hand units, but the price is still high considering that only devoted Palm users are still after them. But yeah, seems like the TX is the perfect choice for this. BTW look at this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/10-NEW-IN-B...#ht_5133wt_1219 Quote: | Originally Posted by wminner

My device is probably 7 or 8 y.o. -wow, it's been a while!! Sony stopped manufacturing the Clie line between 2004-05 (first in Japan, then elsewhere). The problem I've seen with the NX/ NR/ NV series, is that it is extremely complicated on the inside. I've got three units from this series, two of them were dropped, so the screen only displays video intermittently. I did tried once to fix them, but there was so many cables and connectors just on the screen side (it flips open), that I just couldn't keep up.
Palm is much easier to repair IMHO.

Yeah, it seems the majority of us have long switched into other platforms -iOS in my case- and yet many of us have come to discover that new isn't necessarily better. I find it quite frustrating not being able to copy movies straight from my computer to my iPhone without having to convert them first. And then, the format compatibility is pretty much down to a couple of formats. With my Palm all I had to do was to copy them to my SD card and off I went!
I even miss the Palm website!!
