| The TH55 still is a fantastic PDA. The more I use my new Android smartphone, the more I realise that the Sony TH55 was many years ahead of it's time.

+1
And the updates it needs aren't extensive--they could be limited to software. Just the usual OS sync'ing updates, wi-fi and browser updates, updated codecs support for the built-in multimedia apps, and the Clie Organizer updates that would have come if Sony stayed in the market for 1 more year.
I would say my Android phone has supplanted no more than 30% of the TH55 functions I use. And Android data entry for those with big hands ... I haven't found a decent solution. Capacitive touch: bleh. Forces so many hard button pushes because icons have to be big for a finger to accurately touch. So it's rare to see more than 3 soft buttons on any screen, and common to see none. A stylus is just a more precise selector than a finger. Same for a fingernail (which doesn't work on a capacitive touch screen). I use Graffiti and MessagEase for Android, but with not as much success as the Palm variants. |

| Yeah, that's the biggest thing holding me back to my TH55; Nobody has a decent input system on their phones yet!
I had tried the Graffiti on Android, but it's much harder to use with the fingertip (Esp. if your hands are a bit sweaty!)
With my TH55, it's so much faster and I don't have to look at the screen while writing! On screen keyboards are just awful. Only usable on massive tablet devices which don't fit in the pocket, and I'd rather have a sub-notebook (Aka *spits* 'netbooks' ) with an actual keyboard and much more functionality in that case! |

| There are styli for Android/iPhone touchscreens. They are quite popular. You can get them on Amazon for just $15 or so. |

| Yeah, but they're conductive which implies they are metal....
The ones I've seen have a large 'ball' on the bottom rather than a 'tip' in order for the screen's capacitive matrix to detect it.
Not really much better :S |

| I guess you need to try them rather than just look at them... everybody I know who has one, loves it. I'm thinking of getting one for Graffiti and Swype. |

| Yeah, alas the catch-22 is that I also need to get a capacitive-screen device in order to test it properly |

I know you suggested a $15 price point, but I just want to warn that the cheap 3-pack you find on eBay and others is not good. You have to press pretty hard--not good for Swype, for example. Tapping a letter sometimes takes me three taps before I give it enough oomph.
I've had a Just Mobile Alupen capacitive stylus on backorder for almost a month from Beach Audio, because it seemed to have the best reviews on Amazon. I'll report back (if they ever ship!).
Swiftkey keyboard (free today for U.S. residents from the Amazon Android app store) has surprisingly good voice recognition. Of course, still not good for entering data. |

| Sorry, not recommending cheap 3-packs. My son, who owns both, recommends the Boxwave or the eLago, both of which are about $15 on Amazon. |

| My wife just bought a Droid X last week. I'll have to check graffiti out on Android with a stylus. I see where datebk 6 now is on android, so it may be worthwhile to give it a try. I just wish there was a CLIE Organizer in android. |

| I miss my TH55... it was a great device... great battery life... great screen... I had the European version with Wifi/Bluetooth. If only it was a phone... damn you Sony.

| So long farewell... auf wiedersehn good bye! Alas poor Clie, I loved you much...
But I think I should finally remove the memory sticks, and do a cold reset...
It is time to say good bye to this beautiful piece of work. Time to put it away into a box, to be kept as a showpiece.. alongside it's sister TH55, and the oh so elegant NX70....
So few things compare. Yes, I have moved on to a Galaxy S-II. There's swype, but it's not error free. There's a stylus, but there's no place to store it... Sigh.
I have never bought a Sony IT product since they abandoned the Clie, and left us in a lurch. Never again...
I am amazed people still come back here.. I obviously did! :-)
To everyone, so long and thanks for the fish! |
