I think, FOR WHAT IT DOES it's the perfect size
Pandora (source: http://pandora.bluwiki.com/)

* General
o The name: Pandora [1]
o Dimensions: 140 x 83 x 27 mm (slightly larger than a DS Lite: vs 133 mm × 73.9 mm × 21.5 mm)
o Price: 199 GBP(incl. VAT) (approx. $320 (excl. VAT), 286 euros (incl. VAT)
o Release date: March/April 2008 (can and will be changed if needed)
o Case will be a bit smaller the GP2X, and will be a mix of metal and plastic. [2]

* Core Hardware:
o Texas Instrument's OMAP3430 System-on-chip. [3] [4] Specifications can be found at this link: [5]
+ The system may be about as powerful (in the CPU category) as a GameCube when pushed to the limits. [6]
o PowerVR SGX GPU (OpenGL ES 2.0, several million polygons per second). OpenGL ES demonstrated: [7]
o 128MB of DDR SDRAM.
o Real Time Clock (RTC) built in, to keep track of time. [8]
o 256MB of internal flash memory.
o Will probably be unbrickable.

* Display: 800x480 widescreen (5:3), 4.3 inches, touchscreen LCD.[9]
o Brightness:300 cd/m2, Contrast ratio:450:1, Response time:tr+tf=30ms[10]
o Dimensions: 93.6 x 56.2 mm (4.3 inches, 5:3 aspect ratio).
o TV-out included in hardware, A/V-OUT Port outputs S-Video and Composite and inputs 3,5mm Headphone/Microphone cables..
+ Separate TV-out signals, picture-in-picture capabilities. [11]
o Powerful 2D and 3D hardware acceleration, see above. [12]

* Input:
o Buttons, keyboard, microphone, and touchscreen. [13]
o Directional pad will be a D-pad - not a pseudo-analog GP2X-style device. [14]
o Two real analog nubs, will have click function. Will have a rubber grip. A video of the analog nub to be used in Pandora's construction.
o QWERTY keyboard. [15]
o Built-In Microphone [16]
o Potentiometer based wheel or slider for volume control. [17]

* Connectivity:
o 802.11g (Wi-fi) included. USB host included. USB-on-the-go (one-port host and client) maybe. [18]
o The USB will be fully powered (500 milliamps). You'll be able to use anything that has drivers. [19]
o RS-232 will be included, but a level converter will be needed for the UART. [20]
o Twin SDHC slots.

* Software:
o Open2X-type Linux firmware. [21]
o One-click install system - Debian ARM packages probably accepted. [22]
o Potential Emulation: (can anyone who knows add more to this partial list?)
+ Full-speed PlayStation 1 emulation will be a given.
+ Might even have N64 emulation with some hard work.
o Possible Software:
+ Will be capable of running X11 with a window manager and desktop environment, and probably will by default.
+ There should be the ability to run normal programs you can run on Modern Linux builds as well, provided it does not exceed 128MB of RAM (excluding any virtual memory for performance reasons) and is ported. This includes a full build of Firefox! Firefox 3.0 uses much less memory and resources, and should run fine on the Pandora.
+ Macromedia Flash is possible on the Pandora with web browsers with some work. Maybe not full Flash support though, but http://www.gnu.org/software/gnash/ can be ported to the Pandora and run up to FlashV7 guaranteed, play Youtube videos (mplayer and VLC can play FLV files just fine, play other movie files from Firefox, and VLC can stream FLV easily) and can work with Firefox or as a standalone program.
+ Advanced multimedia support, including streaming: mplayer, VLC, xine and any other program that is open source is possible. For a general idea of file support for VLC see http://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.html, and for xine see http://xinehq.de/index.php/features.

* Power:
o Lithium-ion battery. Standard for easy replacement. [23]
o Can charge through AC adapter or USB. [24]
o Advanced power management capabilities: only need to set a max clockspeed, when the CPU is not doing anything it automatically HALTs and does nothing to save a lot of power.[25]

You got that right. Look at what my EEE can do ...

http://www.jamerican.net/?p=69

also, BASSAM @ eeeuser.com has unlocked 1000x600 res for us all ...

http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=18260&p=1

I must say it is definitely an improvement although you loose some quality.

If they sort out the crud battery life and software bugginess from earlier GP2X models, this thing could be a Nokia Tablet killer!

The 128MB of RAM might be a bit tight 'tho, given that hardly anyone can code efficiently anymore
(My N800 is of a similar spec and chokes to death with just the web browser!)

JA, did you get your 3E fixed? I remeber you said you has OS troubles. Mine is still kickin just fine with the stock os (no vice city tho )

Pandora should be OK with 128 mb of RAM. Those are very decent specs for a pda. Maemo on n800 is a bit bloated ;-)

Yea, my EEE works great! My problem is that I kept trying to install nLited XP and Win FLP. Both didn't have everything to make XP complete so I installed the full XP. Works really nicely.

For a 900 mhz machine it sure is pretty snappy. That SSD sure does make a difference

On the pandora front this is what developers say:

MK 0.1's are ready next week. Those will be the ones with all the bugs, hopefully not too many! Coding with development kits still continues as the code will keep maturing week after week. Eventually the migration to Pandora boards will become our only focus but the main difference between Pandora and dev boards now is just wifi, analog nubs and better power management for battery powered applications.

MK1's will be released in May and those should be pretty stable but are allowed to have anything that was missed in the 0.1's. We expect to find more bugs in the kernel than the hardware by that time. This is the limited run of 100 kits to people who want to find bugs and mature the software. We are trying for these to be fully assembled units that run out of the box as it might not be the best idea to provide bare boards to less "electronically" minded individuals. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

After that, and depending on whether suppliers can keep their lead times down, MK2 (which really is just the public release of MK1 unless more board errors are found or parts changes are needed for high volumes) will keep flowing out of the factory and into customer's hands as fast as we can get them out there."

Looks like they are making treadway

I wonder how does it feel with the 7" screen. Wouldn't it be kind of small? I thought of getting Asus EEE 8G however, on second though, I might invest in other higher capacity hard drive machines like toshiba or dell. Even though Asus portability is good, however, the small screen and hard drive space really put me off unless I am rich enough to own a powerful laptop and a portable one. Then my choice for a portable one would be Asus EEE.

The 7" screen isn't bad at all, and the 900 model with 9" screen is being introduced now, albeit for a higher price. The 900, 9" screen and 20GB storage is supposed to be $500.

I've had a 701 for about 3 months, and it has replaced my big laptop and desktop completely. I don't even turn on my desktop, and I gave my Windows laptop to my daughter. It's capable enough for everyday use, if you don't do serious gaming or other CPU and screen intensive stuff. For everyday use, surfing, email, You-tube, etc, it's fine.

I own an asus eee pc and I would love to make it a little jazzy by changing its skin, and to enhance the device’s natural beauty with a choice of some elegant skins.
