| importing Palm data into iPhone So my trusty Treo 680, which has faithfully served me for years died. It survived being dropped from 9th story window onto grass, second story onto concrete, two mashine wash cycles and one swim in the pool.
Getting another one appaears hard, so I bit the bullet and decided to give my iPhone (previously used for development only) a chance. So I jailbroke and unlocked it. Messed with config files to get MMS and Tethering to work, etc.
Importaing of addressbook was a pain in the ass, but I managed it.
However, I wanted to import my [extensive] SMS/MMS logs from my Treo to my iPhone. So far I found no way to do it, so I am now writing an app to do so. I expect to finish it today or tomorrow.
So my questions is: is anyone else interested in a copy?
The Idea is simple: you use SSH or SCP to copy your treo's Messages2 database to the iphone, launch an app, and watch a progress bar spin while your chat history is populated.

| thanks for sharing! I always thought you were anti-iPhone.
if you get a chance, I would love to know how to make changes in the config files to allow tethering. maybe concept will work on a blackberry? I follow you on your blog as coffee.turtle. |

I always thought the same till I saw the thread here.
Dmitry, anything you can share on what you are developing for the Iphone?
Will it be for release purposes or just personal use?
Call me intrigued.
David

| "iPhone is just a phone" I like that. And yes please do not let it distract you from DGOS. My LifeDrive is here waiting patiently. |

| Dmitry, have you ever thought about doing a PalmOS emulator for the iPhone?
running palmos apps on it may be interesting... UPDATE: using emulators in an iPhone is "illegal". Too bad... Good luck with your new iPhone "...when Apple introduced the Software Development Kit (SDK) for the iPhone, the accompanying legal agreement had clauses in it that expressly excluded the entire class of applications – emulators, virtual machines, scripting languages, interpreters – that enabled any type of non-native iPhone applications to be run..." http://blogs.styletap.com/styletap/...for-iphone.html

Now, man. What did you do? The thing ain't PalmOS. You can't simply hack one system call...
Did you build your own kernel? Quote: |

You never really tried that, haven't you? |

| *sigh* i really hate how people doubt me. I always think they'd learn but they never do. Makes me sad.
i dont need to build a kernel. just a kext. Learn to swim before getting in the tank with the sharks, boy.

Your wild and often unconfirmed claims make people doubt you.
That's what's happening. Quote: |

So, say you made a kext.
What does it do?
Patches the actual applications after loading?
Patches a syscall?
Whatever it does, in the end is going to use the NAND as backing store, so how is it different from something managed by the default pager? |

| never mind. i get it. you're one of those rabid apple fanboys, and the thought of someone having done something better than apple just boils your blood.
Sorry to have ruffled your feathers. Please feel free to go back to appleland and enjoy the koolaid.

Here it is.
You start with one of those wild claims of your, but as soon as any solid information is requested you go poof... That's EXACTLY why people doubt you... I just wanted to know what did you do that was THAT better than the built-in pager (which, by the way, is not "by apple", as the mach kernel was designed by the Carnegie Mellon University), because paged on demand virtual memory is a VERY mature technology and there's only so much you can do to increase its efficiency (and generally only because you're tackling a domain-specific case).
I don't have an iPhone. I *DO* program them but, hell, I HATE the thing. Quote: |

It's not I needed any proof, as it isn't the first time some of your over-the-top claims ends this way, I was honestly curious. |
