The most common format for photos is JPeg. Other specialized image formats are often available and confusing. Here is one image conversion program that is free (in order for you to try and maybe buy their higher powered program): http://www.nchsoftware.com/imageconverter/index.html
Since I am not a professional photographer I don't really know much about Raw data that some excellent cameras allow users to modify.
