The Pre looks fantastic, but how do I move my hundreds of contacts, memos and calendar events in my TX to the Pre? |

| Hey Bill.
There are a few things that I know and things that I don't know...yet. Palm or one of their partners will be providing a tool for migrating data out of Palm Desktop and into the Pre. This will be a one-way move. We are no longer going to be using Palm Desktop and the HotSync Manager.
Sprint is requiring that you purchase a voice and data plan. You can get a capped plan, but a simply data or simply everything plan is strongly suggested.
I also know that software will be installed OTA. Since there is no Palm Desktop or HotSync Manager, software will come from the cloud. (Hence the need for data service.) I don't know if Wi-Fi will work or not. The Backup service will run OTA also. My guess is that Palm is going to reactivate the MyPalm Portal tomorrow and do many of the things that I talked about in the past.
The DataViz product is going to be Documents To Go, not BeyondContacts. DataViz has briefed my on the iPhone version of Documents To Go, however, Palm's NDA with DataViz trumps my NDA with DataViz and they can't talk to me about the Palm webOS version; for now.
I also know that Palm has pushed an OTA software update to 1.02 that really addresses some of the issues that have been raised in the early reviews of the Pre and webOS.
I plan to be at my local Sprint store early tomorrow morning to try and score a Pre (there is not PRE-orders yet!!!) before they sell out.
I'll do a podcast of my first impressions as soon as I get my hands on one. I'll also correct any information that I got wrong in this post.

Thanks for your info and thoughts. Too bad about Palm Desktop. I still use it as my PIM. I think it is still the best around! Look forward to your hands on review. Good luck getting one tomorrow! |

Another question: what about Classic? Will a trial come bundled with the Pre? Can it bebought from Plam's app store? Not much has been said recently... |

| I use the desktop as well and will miss it if nobody creates a way to share that data. I can't go to the Pre until someone creates a real Memo app. I've been moving Memos into ThoughtManager, but that will require Classic. That leaves me with exporting from ThoughtManager to Memos and into a WebOS Memo app when available. I was always annoyed by the limited number of categories in Memos, but it appears now that there may be none! And the Sticky Note approach works for some things, but not my tears of documentation. Bummer (for now). Oh, and I'm not reay to fork out $30 (or whatever it is) for Classic unless I really have to. |

Palm Desktop is a good PIM tool. With Palm's web-centric focus, it makes sense to move to a web-centric PIM tool like those offered from Google and Yahoo. There is suppose to be some kind of sync with Outlook, but I don't know yet if it is Outlook > Pre or Outlook > Cloud Portal (ie: Google) > Pre.
I'll know in a few hours hopefully.

I just checked the MotionApps website this morning. Classic will come pre-installed on the Pre and will be in demo mode (7 days). After that, you will need to purchase Classic for $29.99 from the MotionApps website.

Bill:
Classic does not come pre-installed on the Pre. You have to download it from Palm's App Catalog. It is a 7-day fully functioning demo.

| Regarding Documents To Go, Palm has bundled a Doc Viewer application from DataViz. Doc Viewer, as the name implies, allows you to reader Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files. There is a separate PDF Viewer. DataViz will be releasing a version of Documents To Go that allows you to create and edit Microsoft Office documents later this year. (Sorry, gang, my contact wouldn't give me any release dates.)
