Well that was an exageration but I did read the link and they are just going thru more frustrating things like NDS.

-----------------
Remember developers, that the Pre is a phone and not a PDA. Sprint is the boss of Palm and the developers are just an afterthought. Any programs for Pre will have to be approved by Palm and Sprint.

Palm is famous for giving stuff and later taking away different stuff that was there before. Telecoms dictate very strictly because once a cat is out of the bag, it is very hard to put him back. For instance remember that Pre was going to be able to tether to another device? I think Sprint told Palm to take that off the table.

Hi,

This is just a case of how Palm runs themselves, no unified direction.

These people were, according to themselves getting mixed messages, according to the post linked, from the beginning and should have retreated at that point.

They should have also done their research and known who they were dealing with and how they operate.

Clearly there was not a mutual understanding of expectations and it felt that Palm used the nda to get out of further dealings.

I did not read the posts from readers there but did not see anything that appeared to say Sprint was responsible for this either.

Just Palm deciding if they could not control this group, they would dump them, typical of Palm, even if it was benefiting them.

Bottom line is that this was not a marriage that was to happen, too many red flags on both sides where either entity should have felt comfortable.

David

For one thing: Palm should have helped dmitry from the get-go--with powerdrive and other key useful programs--it would have served both of their best interests (Palm lost touch with that some time ago). Dropping PDAs like that leaves a bad taste with many of us who might, eagerly, have jumped to Centro or Treo....

I think harp is right--Palm doesn't know who they are anymore. If I'm correct, very stupidly, Palm has given up on their thousands of associated 3rd-party apps which could have been really useful on a PDA phone--those made Palm unique and assured corporate survival in their past. (Will they even bother to come out with a decent emulator?). Now, I think Palm will get killed by Apple, Blackberry, Motorola, LG, and Samsung--companies which are ingenious with portable devices or may actually know how to incorporate Windows-mobile on clever phones and PDA phones....

Bottom line is that developers are seen as a group that could potentially "kill the goose that lays the golden eggs". Popularity of a device is measured by the amount of devices sold and usage of paying services. The IPhone model is that enough people buy/lease/sign up to the telecoms plan that will enable Apple and ATT sufficient money to keep offering new updates and New IPhone models and still make a profit. Sure some excitement can be generated by developers but certain hacks like enabling tethering is not a very profitable generator for telecoms.

Basically 2nd and third party software just adds headaches to Palm and Telecoms because poorly written ones interfere with smooth operations of their standard device.IPhone likes to offer updates to eliminate hacked programs, most likely Palm will do the same thing.

Current palm users uses a current palm device and don't need palm anymore to do that.

Is that why they gave motionapps access to what they needed to write classic?
Is that why http://pdnblog.palm.com/2009/05/a-predevcamp-update/ ?

Before you count them out... We said they were dead when they put out a good but horribly implemented idea (folly-o, which arguably started neetbook revolution) AND we say they are dead when they put out a decent product?

come on...

Besides, Dmitry doesn't need Palm's help. All they'd do is hold him back with corporate bs

The entire development community doesn't need Palm it appears. I think Palm is mainly interested in profit (after all, they are a business). Fan-base means nothing, apparently. Maybe it shouldn't? I mean as long as I hold on to my old LifeDrive, that means no sales for Palm. They want us to buy new stuff so Palm can make money. Corporate America, Big Business and all that...
