I am absolutely new to linux, I know nothing. So, I downloaded Knoppix, but I can't get the wireless to work. In fact, I can't get any internet connection to work. I have tried to connect an Ethernet, I have tried to connect the Ethernet and restart my computer, all has failed.

Granted, I know nothing, but I figured getting my internet to work first was a good start. I have googled everything I can think of.

Is there anyone out there willing to help????

Linux is very hardware dependant. If you have strange or non-standard hardware, you will probably not be able to get them working under knoppix (though you could with a real installation)

what you can do:
open a konsole and type `lspci |grep ethernet` without the quotes, which reveals what your specific hardware is. then google that with the term linux concatenated on the end.

If you are able to find anything, it will either tell you to download some code and compile a module, which, with knoppix, you will be SOL (unless you want to remaster a CD yourself -- you don't ) but if they imply that the module is already available, open a konsole and type `modprobe` and then whatever the module's name is.

if knoppix has ndiswrapper installed by default (i cannot remember, sorry!) you can download the windows driver, put it on a USB card or sth and set up ndiswrapper accordingly, at each boot

You can always create a small ext3 partition next to your Window's one without losing any data, and put Ubuntu or another beginner's system on it.

If you are new to linux, I would suggest trying out Ubuntu. It seems to have the best hardware support and easy of use. www.ubuntu.com

I ubuntu as well. I am still having the same internet trouble with it. My wireless card is a Broadband (Truemobile 1300 WLAN mini-pci card). Apparently Linux programs do not like this card. I am going to keep trying. If you think of anything else, please let me know.

I have the latest drivers on a flashdrive, and I have ndiswrapper, but when I try to install the drivers, it tells me that I need a .inf instead of a .exe. I can't find the .inf. I hate to say it, but . . . any other suggestions?

You'll need to extract the archive (it's probably an sfx archive or an install shield installer.)

In windows: use universal extractor: legroom.net/software/uniextract
In Linux: use cabextract (or maybe archkiver can): www.cabextract.org.uk/

then you can use the .inf
