Keyboard

Does anyone have any information on when the drivers for the keyboard will be released? I read a few threads before the "big delete" that stated that there might be some sort of hardware upgrade needed for nx compatibility, I haven't been able to find anything on the web about it. I got anxious, and tried thinkoutside's new drivers (v1.6) and they didn't work. Every time I enabled the keyboard, the clie would lock up. I still can't remove them, but as long as I don't enable it, no problems..

Keyboard

I had the same experience. Any idea how to uninstall that file? I'd hate to do a hard reset. The think outside people were no help....

One of the members emailed me saying he would send me a program that would help me remove it. I know there are programs out there to change the read-only attribute of files so that you can delete them. I recently installed uninstall manager and downloaded a clean sweep program to take care of the rest..

Here's the official word from ThinkOutside (thanks go to Gadget for emailing them):

I finally got a response from ThinkOutside support:
Hi,
I currently use your Stowaway Clie Keyboard w/ my NR70 and it's working great. I will be upgrading to a Sony Clie NX70 PDA soon. Are there drivers going to be available for the NX70 model?
Thank You
response from ThinkOutside:
This version is currently under investigation and not available at this time. You can not use the same keyboard with the NX series.
Thanks for your interest.
info@thinkoutside.com

I also had a message from SWGeek stating: The Sony ClieGear KB won't work with the NX. period. Sony made a change to the data line that invalidated the KB circuitry. They are making changes to future pdas to make sure this does not happen, but NX users who have the KB are out of luck.

So.. there you have it..

"Out of Luck"??? Does that mean we will just have to buy a new (different) keyboard, or seriously out of luck?

Sony's Bad

I like Think Outside's products emensely, and Think Outside has received some very unfair criticism over the release of keyboards for Sony models.  First with the delay in the releaes of the "T" series keyboard, and now I expect there will be complaints about the apparant incompatibility (see above) with the NX.  No, I don't work for the company or anything like that, I just want folks to be fair and keep their eye on the ball here.  This SONY's screw up; not Think Outside's.  If you are frustrated by this, take it out on Sony.  Think Outside justs designed and manufactures the product.  If Sony takes its time deciding whether to offer the product and under what brand name, that is not ThinkOutside's fault.  If Sony decides to change the internal hardware configuartion of the port/"T" adapter, that is not Think Outside's fault.  I don't know why, but it just makes me angry to see folks criticizing Think Outside when the arm chair critics have no idea what goes on behind the scenes and who's fault this stuff really is; because it isn't Think Outside's!

There.  Now I feel better.  :-)

I completely agree.. I wasn't trying to blame thinkoutside with my post (actually two e-mails were sent but sony hasn't responded yet, thinkoutside responded within a few days) I was simply trying to point out that it is because Sony* changed their hardware. So this is not simply a driver issue. Anyway.. hopefully there will be a keyboard soon and then everyone with have to complain about something else..

So far . . . None

As far as I know, so far there aren't any.  There isn't even an OS5 driver for the Pocketop (which, IMHO, is terrible).  That is the penalty for being on the bleeding edge of technology.  By the way, this is the ONLY reason I have not upgraded my NR to an NX.  As much as I'd like to, the keyboard issue is a deal killer for me.

If you have the Palm Tungsten, you would have no problem using the existing keyboard or the new XT keyboard.

I think Sony needs to step up or it will be losing many more customers in the future.

Sony has spoiled me

Unfortunately, after owning the NR, I am having a great deal of trouble convincing myself to buy a PDA without a camera.  I don't so much mind the T|T, but I like having an onboard camera.  I even have a PalmPix for the m500 series, which will work with the T|T, but that is not good enough for me.  Damn Sony for setting the bar so damn high.  :-|  Now, if only the product managers were as good as the technical and development people, this keyboard issue might never have happened (but that is a guess too; I don't really know who dropped the ball on this one).

So has anyone heard of *any* keyboard coming out for the NX? I see it's not an OS5 issue, just a Sony design blunder. It upsets me because I just got the KB11 a month after I got my SJ30 and a month before I got the NX70. Now since my wife doesn't use the keyboard for her SJ, and I can't use it for my NX, it makes for an expensive paper weight. So with that and the CF driver dilemma, and my NX in the shop for repair, I've been window shopping for a "backup" PDA (or possibly replacement).

I type 40-50 wpm w/ the thumbpad laying it flat and using my fingers (mainly my index). I would rather use this for taking notes in class than a folding keyboard... but i guess my fingers are smaller than others.

Enjoy.

Albert Hon of Darfon says that we should expect a NX driver for the Belkin keyboard by the end of this month. Whether this hardware issue with the data line in the hotsync connector is a problem with the Belkin or not has yet to be seen.

I understand that Fellowes (www.fellowes.com) showed the ThinkOutside Stowaway and StowawayXT keyboards at CES (branded with the Fellowes logo). I also understand that they work with the NX. I've been told people will be able to buy them around May (if I remember correctly).
