| I'm running out of RAM,.... again! I'm having the same problem I used to have with PCs, once upon a time you never had enough disk space or RAM, at least now they have kind of fixed the Hard disc problem on PCs, I traded a Palm TT for the UX50, thought wow, 102megs, but 3months down the road, I am always working with only 2mg RAM free or less, I hope some smart person finds a way of recovering all the memory we are not using on the UX. I have exhausted the AliasExt trick, are running only what I have to from RAM, and hope the manufacturers of Epocrates some day soon will realise that RAM was not designed exclusively for their sole use, it eats an annoying 3meg of my precious RAM |

| oh NOOO! THAT would be going backwards! It did take me a lot to buy Sony, for I hated the memory Stick being propreitary(sp), I guess I am going to stick with the UX for now, I wonder when they will come out with an OS that can give us over 128mg "true" RAM, so we can stop whinging about memory hogs like Epocrates, Docs2Go and the likes

| I agree with you re: ePocrates being a memory hog. I am trying out other programs like Lexi and Pepid which allow me to use memory card for the databases but ePocrates is easier to navigate. Oh well, I do hope they will come up with a memory card compatible version.

| They (epocrates) have been talking about memory support for over a yerar now, when they realised they had market share, that went on the back-burner.
I don't know of a worse memory hog than epocrates, and it is also very temperamental, it does not want being tinkered with.

| When you say you have moved ALL you can to AliasExt, did you also include the data files that the apps use? Any data file with the same CreatorID as the app can be moved with the app -- this works whether the file is modified during use or static.
As an example, I selected PalmReader in the built-in file manager (McFile "Lite"), and chose "by creator". Selecting ALL the files there, and moving them to AliasExt freed up some 3MB of RAM, and that was without a single book. Just formatting hints, bookmarks and similar for around 100 books.
I would believe that the same can be done with ePocrates -- moving not only the app itself to AliasExt, but all of the data files with the same CreatorID too.
Regards,

| If you move Epocrates to the card, whether AliasExt or not, it won't sync

| I started running out as well. I figured it was my email that was building up and I need to lessen my inbox constantly to keep up. I also took off some ppt's and excel files that I really didn't need.
I use Zlauncher. What a great product to move stuff around.

blackdoc,
I saw a program called Teal Alias, which will allow you to move apps to the card and assign the 'shortcuts' an app id, which Teal Point claims will allow the conduit to sync while it is on the external card. Here is an excerpt from their manual: Mimic Creator ID and version
An additional special option appears at the bottom of the file select window meant to enable compatibility with running applications with HotSync conduits from external storage cards. Normally, the Palm Desktop will only launch a HotSync conduit if an
application with a corresponding CreatorID is present in main memory. For these instances, check this option to support such a conduit with an externally-stored application. This option will not substitute for applications requiring more complex interaction with their conduits, and never set this option for apps already present in main memory. Note also that although a conduit will run, this option does not facilitate HotSyncing of any data stored on the external card if the conduit requires those files to
remain in main memory.
You may want to look into this program. Here is a URL to their website product page: http://tealpoint.com/softalia.htm

| I use Fly-Zip to keep most of my software compressed onto my Memory Stick. It has a beautifuly simple interface and.. just sort of works. I hardly have to think about it. (I haven't investigated the AliasExt thing at all). |

| OMG....If u have not investigated Alias Ext, u absolutely must! It is only a matter of time before you will need to;
Just use a file manager like Zlauncher. Move the prc and any other related files (pdbs, etc) to system/palm/alias ext/(new subfolder which you should name according to app)
Soft reset and viola! free RAM. Apps also start faster as compared to trying to run off MS.
Catch: you MUST have at least enough RAM to run the app which is in your Alias Ext folder. ie, If the app or game you put in Alias Ext requires 2mb of RAM to run, you must have that much free space. What this trick does is to copy the app to RAM only when you need it and moves it back to internal media when you exit.
Caution: Will not work with Avantgo or Verichat. Partial success with DTG. When you want to delete the app, you need to use your file manager to delete from Alias Ext folder. Using Uninstall Manager is awsome for this as it not only removes leftovers....it also shows you what files are installed during an installation so you can move em all to the same subfolder in Alias Ext! |
