#1 | | Guest | Memory card "problems"? i finally bought a 128MD card for my Clie. yippee!
i transfered my Hopkins Abx guide to the card---i think! it works fine, but the handheld menu says that it has 230K of the guide, while the card menu says nothing, except 1.2MBs are being used.
is it supposed to work that way? and should i expect that for other programs that ii transfer onto memory cards? | |

| sounds about right
Most programs require part of them to be on the internal memory (usually .prc files) and the rest is on the MS (.pdbs)

| Yes, exactly right. The main PRC files will remain on the machine for larger programs like Sanford, Hopkins, Tarascon, and all the Skyscape programs. Typically, these take up about 100-200k. The database files (PDB's) are all on the card and these take up TONS of memory. Other programs like iSilo can have both the program and databases on the card. It's kind of a trial and error process to move things around and see what works and what doesn't. I've got an NR70V with a 128 card and the entire card is filled with med programs. I have about 3.5 megs left on the main machine, and that is with using flash memory. All in all, the first PDA that offers 32megs or greater on the machine is probably going to be the one I upgrade to next. I can honestly say that I have the perfect amount of space right now, but you never know what programs are going to come out in the future. You can never have enough memory. |

| If you intend to use applications, especially those with large databases, from the external memory device (memory stick); it is important to remember the following: - Applications that update automatically during each hotsync (e.g., Epocrates) will NOT operate correctly if not in RAM. Currently none of these programs is designed (to my knowledge) to work out of RAM. Perhaps they will in the future.
- Most applications, not falling into the category above, will work just fine from the memory card. Many of these will keep a small prc file (analogous to exe files on your PC) resident in RAM, while the data file (pdb) can remain on the card/stick.
- A good utility application, such as Power Run (OS5 capable) or PiDirect (NOT OS5 compatible at this time) will make your life much easier.
- Experiment.
