| I don't know much about this - in fact I gave up trying to transfer my Palm m500 info to my Sony NX70 - but the latest issue of Handheld Computing Magazine has an article about how to do it.
You have to
1) erase the palm desktop (make a copy of your data first so you can bring it back in later), then
2) load the sony desktop and then
3) reload the palm desktop over top of the sony desktop
4) then some more stuff (I don't have the article in front of me) to get it to automatically upgrade your info.
Seems the Sony desktop is an earlier version than the "old" Palm desktop so the palm desktop has to be installed on your computer after the "earlier" Sony desktop.
I suppose it works or they would not write a whole article about it. They do not have a website that carries their articles - though pdabuzz.com is connected with them. (And in some disrepair because of them).

| "How to convert the Handspring® Visor® Desktop data for use with the PalmTM Desktop software supplied with the CLIÉTM handheld.
To convert Handspring® Visor® Desktop data for use with the PalmTM Desktop software supplied with the CLIÉTM handheld, the old version of PalmTM software must be uninstalled from the computer prior to installing the new version. The user folder must be moved to a temporary location, while the new software is being installed. After the new software has been installed properly, the user folder will need to be moved back to the \Program Files\Sony Handheld\ directory."
This did not work for me. It is possible I did something wrong, but palm desktop for clie would not open when I replaced the address book with my old palm address book.
A OS 4 and OS 5 conflict? |

| My method was rather simple (although looks complicated).
1. I backed up my whole Palm Handheld folder from the Programs folder in the C drive to another part of the hard drive
2. Uninstalled the Palm desktop,
3. Installed Sony's version of the Palm desktop as if it was my first Palm device (I just made sure that the user name was exactly he same as my old Palm III).
4. Did a hotsync.
5. Installed rest of the components of the install CD.
6. I went to the newly created Sony handheld folder in the Programs folder in the C drive, found the new (and empty) files in the address, datebook, memo pad, and todo list folders and deleted them (should be two files per folder: for instance, in the "address" folder, "address.bak" and "address", which comes up as DAT file).
7. Went to the old Palm desktop desktop folder that I backed up and found the old .bak and DAT files for the address, datebook, memo pad, and the todo list and put it into the exact location of where the deleted ones were (It should be in C: > Program files > Sony Handheld > Folder with your first initial and last name on it > "address", "datebook", "todo", and "memopad" folders)
8. Hotsync one more time and voila! You are done.
I would keep the old back up around to load any installed programs you want to keep from the "archive" and "backup" folders.
P.S. I would also suggest using this method for going from OS4 to OS5 Clies. Trust me (I had to do this when I went from my NR70V to NX70V). It will save you from pulling your hair out.

| I'm on Mac using and had been using Palm Desktop 4 with my handsrping. I bought NX 60 and Missing Sync (required to use clie on Mac).
All I had to do was install missing cync, plug in clie and hit the hot sync button. Now I had backed up my user files under palm desktop just in case something went bad, but I did not have to do anything special.
Never installed any of the software from the Sony CD.

I followed all your steps and it did not work for me. I couldn't get my old address book to transfer to the new NX70.
Any hints of what I am doing wrong? |

| The easiest way is to just export your data from the old Palm desktop, uninstall, installi the new one, and import the data.
For your programs, reinstall if possible, or go through the backup folder before uninstalling Palm desktop, and copy any programs you want to install on the new handheld, then just add them like any other Palm program later on. (That won't work for everything, and some stuff might not be compatible with your new handheld). |

That's weird. I've done this method couple of times in the past. (from the Palm III to the N710, and NR70V to NX70V)
If you have the old device, beaming works great for the addresses, but IIRC, you can't beam the datebook data.
My method was the only option for me when my old NR70 was replaced by store warranty so that I had nothing to beam the old data from, and hotsynching the Sony desktop data from the NR install to the NX just locked up my NX repeatedly.
OH CRAP! I think I remember what I forgot! I think you only replace the .bak file and not the other DAT file!
I remember I had to do several experiments with this, and I vaguely remember stumbling upon this little detail about only replacing the one file and not both of them.
Hmmmm...... Maybe I should try this out for you guys on my install.
Will be back with the results.
