Exactly. The MP3 decoding is done in the TEAK DSP, separate from the main CPU.

The DSP version of the MP3 decoder is not as general as the 3rd party PocketTunes/AeroTunes/MMPlayer software decoders. The known problems with the AudioPlayer not playing VBR or funny sample rate MP3s are because of these limitations.
It is possible to write a new user interface to the existing audio player (ie. like FullMoviePlayer does for movies), but that's only a small portion of why people use PocketTunes (or other 3rd party players). It would have the same limitations (ie. CBR not VBR)
FWIW: If all your music is in proper CBR format, and you don't need features like streaming, I recommend sticking to the built in AudioPlayer, perhaps with AlbumSwap to help with organization. Amazing play times on the TH, and even longer on the VZ. |
