Thanks for the reply. But it doesn't come with the FPC cable that connects it to the motherboard.. Looks like the cable IS faulty - unstable resistance with multimeter on some contacts. Any idea...

Even if you format the >1GB SD Card to a partition of < 1GB it won't be recognised by the T|E2 while the Zire72 happily reads it with default fatfs library.

In all probability it is a slot driver issue(Clue: put the mmc.prc for T|E then T|E2 does not respond to ANY cards just like it natively fails with >1GB cards).
