I think you've hit the nail on the head. There's no microphone. Presumably there's no voice audio capability as there's no need for it. The only audio is for system sounds and playback of audio.

I found the solution. The phone connects fine using the 6310i settings, and I needed an additional APN in my phone. For Vodafone UK to use the phone as a modem I had to set the APN to "Internet"...
