Hi Hippo - Yet another question for you regarding the JC40 mod. Have you had to replace the original contacts as well as putting in the two new ones? The photo here shows what I assume is a new connector. Have you used these to replace te original contacts?
Thanks again ;)

Hey, JAmerican,

Foil is a poor conductor...modern alum foil is actually some mylar base, coated with a bit of aluminum. What you should get is alum foil tape, from a heating store, it's feels like metal. Or, I use a copper tape, which conducts ten times better. And, I solder directly to it. You might also get some "Liquid Silver Print" or "Nickel Print" from GC Electronics. In the field, we use it to fix busted traces on circuit boards. It's basically silver powder, mixed into a glue that evaporates a bit. So, it's conductive glue.

I'd put a dot of the "SP" or "NP" on the battery terminals, then put the copper piece there (already soldered) and wait until it sticks.

Alum foil from the kitchen (depending on brand) can get so much resistance that it will cut your voltage/ current ratio below what is required to charge. This is like having a USB charging mod, and running a thin USB cable to the UX, or charging through some self-powered USB hubs...not enough current and/or voltage to get a "full" charge.

Think kinda like the theory that a small pipe which leaks around the joints cannot keep enough pressure to get water far enough away from the nozzle. Then get a small pipe that is not leaking. Now, try a large pipe that doesn't leak...

Yes, the oringal contacts were replaced by this pair of DIY "spring connectors"

Thanks for the info. I'm trying to figure out where I can find copper tape. How much is it? I know copper is considered the best conductor so is the tape 100% copper? I have a Home Depot a few blocks from my house so I'll pay it a visit :).

Thanks.

Hippo, I just thought of something.

Could I connect my EB batteries to the second/third prong of the UX and lead a wire from those to the connections in the UX due to the UX doesn't use them without the EB40 step-up circuit connected to it? I have a feeling something like this was asked before so I hope this question doesn't aggrivate you.

if you connect to pin2, UX will think it is a real EB40 & switch to external power mode that means, UX will not draw power form internal battery & your moded EB40 beacuase your moded EB40 & my moded JC40K both are EXPANDED internal battery.
pin3 is EB40 controller, don't connect your EB40 to pin3, it may blown your UX.

Thats my point though. I don't want it to draw power to the pin into the system but to the pin itself. I understand pin3, thanks for that info, but pin 2 being is basically a dud without the EB40 motherboard's step-up circuit, so can I infact connect to that pin and ground to pin 4 for the EB batteries and then connect a Wire in my UX from Pin 2 to my internal mod in my UX? If current is sent to Pin 2, doesn't the UX ignore it due to Pin 3 EB40 notification is missing?

Hippo 12-07-2005 07:34 PM

no, UX will still think EB40 was attached when pin2 is connected, that why I cut the Pin2's cable inside UX

Oh. dam. I see now. Thanks for the info. I tried to cut pin 2 on an old UX I have and its really hard. I'm going to try and get Conductive Copper Adhesive. Then replace my aluminum foil connectors with those and see how that does :).

Making the contacts for the JC40 mod is turning into a nightmare :(

Hippo - Your pictures show an additional hook to secure the cradle to the Clie. What have you made this from and how is it secured to the cradle?

sonypenguin 12-14-2005 04:07 PM

Oh,,, man.
You all are sabotaging UX50. Poor UX50 and EB40.

How about using a Axim's extended batter? It's 3500mAh already.

m0nkeyb0y 12-14-2005 04:48 PM

If Sony hadn't crippled the UX with a poor battery, none of this would be necessary :)

dragonsgames 12-14-2005 04:50 PM

True. Very, very true. :D

JAmerican 12-14-2005 06:07 PM

Sonypenguin, when I get a laptop, none of this will be necessary. I think I might get a smartphone next though. WM possibly. Not too sure I want a JASJAR anymore due to its price is kinda high and it has no EDGE/EVDO/HSPDA.

This is the earliest version of mod, the hook was made by a metal hook from the connector of Palm M505 bluetooth module (dead one).
The hook was removed in updated version of JC40K mod because the hook was too close to the Camera film cable inside UX50.
