New TREO 650

Just bought my first TREO.
It is one of those Unlocked, Unbranded ones so that I can move form GSM company to GSM company.
Anyway I wanted to know how to check and see if I have the most resent OS software on it.
I noticed on the Palm page that there is a upgrader version 1.20 available.

Not sure if I need this or not.
Can someone please advise as to how I can check?
Thanks

Go to the Phone app, then go to the menu (tap the top part of the screen or press the menu key above the email button), then Options>>Phone Info.

1.20 is very good, highly recommend it!

Congrats n0m0n. I've always been using unlocked Treos. Have fun!

Thanks

But this is strange most of the info is blank/missing
Number is: BLANK
IMEI Number: BLANK
HS SN: PTWG02N......
SA Number is: BLANK
Firmwares: BLANK
Software TREO650-1b. 17-CNB
Hardware: A

What does this mean that everything is blank?
Can I still upgrade to 1.20?
Thanks

Did you turn on the phone radio yet? That's should be why all that stuff is blank. It also shows you are running a Cingular v1.17 ROM, so you can't directly upgrade to 1.20. There is a way, but I have to dig up the file first.

This is a unlocked phone or so I was told.
What do you mean its a Cingular 1.17?
Can i whip Cingular off and more importantly can I upgrade (brand free) to version 1.20.
I was hoping to do this upgrade today. ;(

If you're not with Cingular (T-Mobile, I suppose) and it works, it's unlocked. The ROM inside though is Cingular-branded. Download the file below, unzip that into an empty SD card, plug in the Treo to a charger, and put the card in. It'll delete all that Cingular junk and give you a custom 1.20 ROM, complete with a few extras (Voice Memo and Note Pad).

*Note that this will erase ALL DATA ON YOUR PHONE

I found that the guy sent me a Branded phone that was not unlocked.
Just paid for a on line unlocking company to generate the code for me.
Upon unlocking this thing myself do I follow the link:

Thanks

Yup. You can do it before unlocking as well, but you probably want to unlock it first. Which site did you get the code from? 650unlock.com? Those guys are very good with great instructions.

n0m0n, I did buy an UNLOCKED TREO 650 (Cingular logo on it) as well and im planning to use it with my prepaid T-mobile card. Its working great. I just cant figure it out how to delete the old user name... i did read the treat about it but somehow i don't get there...

Bad thing in my case is that i dont have much services with prepaid card...
btw, the PalmOne version on my phone is v.5.2H....
i dont see any version 1.2...:-(

You're looking for the software (ROM) version, as shown above.

To get rid of the username, do a zero-out reset:

1) Take off the battery cover
2) Hook up the HotSync cable and the charger
3) Take your stylus, insert it lightly into the reset hole WITHOUT PRESSING THE RESET BUTTON
4) Balance the Treo on your stylus (I do it on my leg)
5) Hold the up on the 5-way, Power, and the HotSync button on the cable
6) While holding all those buttons, push the Treo down so the stylus presses the reset button
7) The screen should go black, stay that way for up to 10 minutes, then come back on, factory fresh and with internal memory cleaned up.

heh that's the easiest way I found to do the zero-out reset. If you get a rainbow-coloured bootloader screen, you did it wrong, so try again. :)

You need to be careful if your phone is/was a Cingular brand phone. Even if it is unlocked, it is still a Cingular phone. Palm warns on their website about doing ROM updates for the phones, and that they need to be specific for the carrier's phone. If you flash a Cingular phone with the unlocked GSM update, it can cause problems. At least that is their warning. Here is the support link that shows the 650 Update links:
